Hi,
I am quitting smoking. I am planning on using the patch, but, when I
was once in the hospital, and couldn't smoke, I was given sort of a
"plastic" cigarette/
The tip was plastic and you could get nicotine by "puffing". I think
that you could only get that by prescription. I forget exactly what
its called and who it is made by. Can you help?

Hi serenity222,

I believe you are referring to the "Nicotrol Inhaler" (nicotine
inhalation system), developed by Pfizer Inc.

"How It Works

The Nicotrol Inhaler lets you control the amount of nicotine you get
when you get a craving to smoke. By holding the inhaler between your
fingers and puffing on it, you'll get the nicotine your body needs to
control your craving, but in a less concentrated ? and less addictive
? dose than when you smoke. The Nicotrol Inhaler should be used as
part of a comprehensive behavioral modification program.
And the Nicotrol Inhaler leaves out the tars, toxins, and other
cancer-causing substances found in cigarette smoke.
The Nicotrol Inhaler is currently available by prescription from your
doctor. And you can have faith in Nicotrol because it was developed by
Pfizer, a global leader in tobacco dependence treatment. "

Yes, you'll need a prescription from your doctor.

On the "Nicotrol Inhaler Safety" page, it states:

"The Nicotrol Inhaler is a prescription medication and, as with any
prescription medication, you should talk to your healthcare
professional about possible side effects or problems."

Ciggies are now about $7-$9 per packet. I gave them up, after wasting
money, after 15 years, not because of health, but because of cost. Had
a little shop where I bought them wholesale for 29c. and sold them on
for 35c. I gave them away because they were costing me too much, even
then. Three packs a day. Find a good reason to give them up, develop
some intestinal fortitude, and ignore the cravings, treat it like
pain. Put up with it. And you will bless the results.
Guts, not luck, will get you through.
