I'm going to answer this question in a fashion that's backwards from a
typical Google Answer: by describing the search strategy first (rather
than at the end). The reason for this is that by doing so, it would
allow you to acquire an extensive list of major bankruptcy filings
since 1985 for free.

Using the following terms will turn up excellent resources in the top 20 pages:
Google search strategy:
Bankruptcy Data Reporter
Bankruptcy U.S. emergence
BankruptcyData.com

----

MAJOR RETAIL BANKRUPTCIES

For example, if you want to look at major retailers involved in
bankruptcy actions, here's a list from BankruptcyAction.com showing
the date that they ENTERED bankruptcy proceedings. The dates that
they entered Chapter 11 proceedings are indicated below; by crossing
the list with the excellent Hoover's Online pages at
hhtp:///www.hoovers.com we can quickly see which ones are public and
their trading symbols (on the 2nd line):

Kmart 1/22/2002
Emerged May, 2003

Federated Department Stores 1/15/1990
NYSE: FD

Montgomery Ward Holding Corp. 7/7/1997
Now Montgomery Ward LLC

Macy (R.H.) & Co. Inc. 1/27/1992
Subsidiary of Federated Department Stores

Allied Stores Corp. 1/15/1990
No data

Southland Corp. 10/24/1990
Now 7-Eleven Corp., NYSE: SE

The Circle K Corp. 5/15/1990
Private.

Carter Hawley Hale Stores 2/11/1991
No data.

Ames Department Stores Inc. 1990 and 2001
Private.

Revco D.S. Inc. 7/28/1988
Private.

BANKRUPTCYDATA.COM

Note that there are some excellent resources outside the Internet,
including New Generation Research's annual "Bankruptcy Yearbook &
Almanac," which you can order or which may be available at a good
business school library near you. Note that the research company's
pages are an excellent source of up-to-date news on bankruptcy
actions:
New Generation Research
"2003 Bankruptcy Yearbook & Almanac" ($99)
http://www.bankruptcydata.com/yb03toc.pdf

However, you can acquire a VERY complete list of major bankruptcies
from the website of BankruptcyData.com by using their search
capability -- and searching each company by first letter of their
name. For example, below is the search for companies starting with
the letter "A," starting with major bankruptcies back to 1985:
http://www.bankruptcydata.com/brdsSelectByAlpha.asp?Task=Retrieve&FL=A

Just change the last letter in the search string and you can get a
list for each letter in the alphabet. Here's M. Searching this way
allows you to quickly find MAJOR firms that have emerged from some
kind of bankruptcy action in the past 14 years:

Again, using Hoover's data we add to the list:

I did not receive all the information that I needed. I needed publicly
traded companies that had already emerged from bankruptcy and not a
list of companies that I had to look up to see if they were publicly
traded and if they did emerge from bankruptcy.

There are 35 companies listed there -- with their exchange and trading
symbol. All have emerged from Chapter 11 and been trading for more
than a year.

What you also received was a METHOD to find more.
