My understanding is that FTP and Email were not introduced on the
ARPANET until 1972, three years after it was first set up in 1969.
What I want to know is how did communications work on the ARPANET work
prior to 1972? In other words, prior to email how did users
communicate over the ARPANET? Prior to FTP, how did they exchange
files and programs? I am not seeking a description of the protocol
used at the time, but information on how the communications described
above worked prior to FTP/Email. Suitable answer can be brief with
links to suitable sites providing background to this question. Thanks.
