Question ID: 400287
I am considering investing in an index of a foreign stock market, probably the US.
I want to see the trend in the past five to ten years of the price of
the dollar, and the Euro, and the yen.
I also need to see similar graphs, but for the value of the stock
index itself, for US, EU, and Japan.

Hi! Just want to make sure...

a. As with the US Dollar, do you want it compared with the Euro or with Yen?

b. The EU I think has no specific stock index yet, it is still by
individual countries. Maybe we can just point out a country whose a
member of the EU and work from there. Is this ok with you?

Thanks!

Well, I understand there is an overall index for the price of a
currency. How that is calculated, I have no clue, maybe an amalgam of
other currencies.
If not that, then UK pounds, as that is where I am.

I guess maybe there is no EU index yet. I think Germany is a good bet.
Denmark would be nice too, since I am Danish.

If you look at
http://zealllc.com/2004/usdbear3.htm

... you can see that there is a measure of the price of a currency,
without comparing it to any specific other currency.

Hi eolake!
Do you only need the charts or you also want an analysis of the trends
of the instruments you're instersted in?

Best regards,
elmarto

Sorry, I forgot to mention this in my Request for Clarification.
Although there is a US Dollar Index that measures the strength of the
dollar against a basket of other currencies, there is no such thing
for the Euro, Yen or Pound. I could be able to provide charts for Euro
and Yen against the Pound, though. Please tell me if this is what
you're looking for.

Best regards,
elmarto

"Do you only need the charts or you also want an analysis of the trends

The charts is the most important thing.

I guess Euros compared to pounds will do.

Hi eolake!
You can find the charts you are looking for in the following links:

- US Dollar Index

MRCI's TDR
http://www.mrci.com/client/tdr/dx/

StockCharts (this site shows less history, but the charts are better)
http://stockcharts.com/gallery?$USD

- Other Currencies

IntelliChart
http://quote.fxtrek.com/misc/fxcm.asp

This java applet will show you the price history of all the mejor
currencies. You can choose how far back you want the chart to go using
the "Time Scale & Period" menu (for example, Daily --> 10 years). The
currency you want to see can be selected with the File - Change Symbol
menu. Since you are looking for the pound against yen and the pound
against the euro, you should select the following symbols:

GBP/JPY Yens per 1 Pound
EUR/GBP Pounds per 1 Euro

You might also be interested in the following:

EUR/USD Dollars per 1 Euro
GBP/USD Dollars per 1 Pound

- Stock Indices

A good place to look for charts of the major international stock
indices would be Yahoo! Finance

Major World Indices
http://finance.yahoo.com/intlindices?u

A nice feature of Yahoo! Finance is that you can actually download the
historical prices if you want to do your own analysis using a
spreadsheet.
