Please see the end of this paragraph from the USPS mailbox regulations: 3.3 Materials Ferrous or nonferrous metal, wood (restrictions apply), plastic, or other materials may be used, as long as their thickness, form, mechanical properties, and chemical properties adequately meet the operational, structural, and performance requirements set forth in this standard. Materials used must not be toxic, flammable or transparent. Sorry... no seethru Now for the bomb sniffing part. How much you willing to spend? -AI |

Bomb detecting equipment falls into 2 main categories, active and passive. Active, such as dogs and the cotton cloths that are wiped all over everything. And passive, such as the large trace sniffers. Well, I don't think the USPS will allow a dog at your box. And, um once you have the package and are rubbing it down with that cloth, it doesn't really matter, if it's a bomb anymore. Last but not least... passive detection. You can get that, the cost is maybe prohibitive. Around $750,000. I don't think a unit like that will fit within the sizing guidelines set forth by the USPS either. -AI [oversimplified for clarity] |

This page has some interesting stuff: http://www.spystuff.com/specialtyprod.html Check the X-Ray scanners... You may also think of placing X-ray digital camera beside your box. They seem to cost around $4000 - To0d |

I read two articles talking about three different individuals that made clear mail box doors. One of the articles quoted post office officials saying that having a clear door would not be a problem in light of recent events. Unfortunately, neither article gives contact information for the individuals that make the doors. http://www.pressanddakotan.com/stories/051002/new_0510020017.shtml http://www.dmregister.com/news/stories/c4788998/18170153.html |

American Postal Manufacturing, http://www.mailproducts.com/, is listing see-through doors for various sizes of mailboxes. I am not sure if this is for residential mailboxes, but you may want to give them a call. They do not list prices or availability of the producty on their website |
