I have several questions about the papaya fruit and the allergies
associated with it. I was wondering if someone could tell me what
percentage of the U.S. or world population might be allergic to the
papaya fruit and, more importantly, what would those allergies consist
of? For example, would an allergic reaction to papaya juice being
injested result in a three or four day stay at a hospital or would it
just might make one nauseated? Are allergies topical oriented or
digestive oriented. Would a person allergic to papaya juice also be
allergic to the papaya fruit or plant itself or the extracts of them.
Also, is there a list somewhere of products that contain papaya juice
or papaya extract? What about commercial fruit juices or food stuffs
that contain papaya or papaya extract? Answers to any or all of these
questions would be greatly appreciated.

I found some interesting facts regarding Indirect (Other allergies
that may cause Papaya allergies) Papaya allergies:

From http://www.anaphylaxis.org.uk/adult.html

"Some people with latex allergy also react to certain foods. The ones
to watch out for in particular are banana, avocado and chestnut. Also
on the list are kiwi, mango, melon, papaya and raw tomato"

From http://www.drugdigest.org/DD/DVH/HerbsCareful/0,3924,552451%7CCarica+papaya,00.html

"Reportedly, individuals who are allergic to figs or kiwi fruit may
also be allergic to papaya or to papain, which is derived from the
papaya fruit Allergic reactions to papain have also been reported in
individuals who are sensitive to the ornamental houseplant, weeping
fig (Ficus benjamina)."
