I interview with a company last week and things went quite well. I
expect to get an offer any day now.

The only issue is a potential logistical problem since I am expecting
to get invited on two other interviews (one company in Portland area,
one in Orlando area, and I am in San Diego.)

The offer I am expecting this week appears to be very good, however I
still want to have a chance to interview with the two other companies
if possible.. Should I tell the HR guy I need a 1 to 2 weeks to
consider the offer (while I visit the other firms) without a clear
explanation. Or should I just come clean an tell him I have the other
interviews lined up and need to choose the best opportunity.

In most situations, I would lean towards the more open/honest response,
however I am concerned it will give him the impression I am not overly
interested in the job (Although I really am) and also diminish my
bargaining strength when it is time to negoiciate the compensation
package..Also, I have an ex-colleague/friend at the firm who did a lot
of leg work on my behalf to set up the interviews, and introduce me to
folks, so I am a little concerned if my discussion with HR goes sour,
he might feel he stuck his neck out for me, yet I was not real serious
about the position.

IS there a typical manner people handle these situations, and what is
a reasonable amount of time to delay my decision. (two weeks would be
enough time to get the other offer(s), but I'm worried the original offer might
fall apart by then).

FYI, I am an engineer in a highly specialized electronics field, so it
is tough to change jobs without relocating since there are so few
companies specializing in my field.

I'd tell the HR person you need 1 to 1 and half weeks to decide given
the relocation. Then close with: Would it be okay if I call you in a
couple of weeks and give you my answer? At this point, if the HR
person is working on a deadline they will let you know, if they aren't
then he'll give you the time.

Just my idea....

Good luck.
