used for campaigning (trying to attract votes), what is the ratio of
votes gained per dollar spent?

Yes, that's an interesting article (thanks).  To clarify, though: my
question was about contributions used to influence popular votes for
candidates in elections, not about buying elected leaders' votes on
legislative issues.
