Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. There
are a number of factors involved in a testing procedure and
unfortunately the answer to your question is considerably more
complicated than applying a strict formula according to what drug has
been ingested and how long it has been since the last exposure. In
addition everyone is different and no two people are physically the
same in terms of retention. Having said that there are some
generalities regarding drug testing and retention and I will attempt
to cover those and explain them where necessary:
Drug tests detect drugs as well as metabolites. Metabolites are the
byproducts of a substance after it has run its course through your
system. To determine whether you will pass a drug test or not, it is
important to know how much of the illicit metabolites are in your
urine (assuming this is a urine test) and how much is tested for, the
latter being entirely out of your control and having a great bearing
on whether or not you will pass or fail.
Where Tetrahydracannabinol (THC in marijuana) is concerned there is
just too much human variation to even approximate how long it can be
detected in the urine of an individual. The half-life of THC ranges
between 0.8 to 9.8 days. THC tends to store in fatty tissues of the
organs so infrequent users with a fast metabolism (low body fat) will
have the shortest detection time. Frequent users with a slow
metabolism will have longer detection times simply by virtue of the
fact that they use more often and have more storage space (fat) for
the metabolites. The only reasonable way to estimate a detection time
is to consider the lower and upper bounds, which is roughly 3 to 30
days in most individuals though rarely some chronic users have tested
positive in excess of 30 days. Generally speaking however, if you
smoke marijuana today and you get tested tomorrow, chances are you
will fail the test. If you are an infrequent user with a relatively
fast metabolism and you smoke marijuana ONE TIME today only to take a
test 5-7 days later, the likelihood that you will pass the test is
indeed much greater. On the other hand, if you are an infrequent user
and you smoke an extraordinary quantity of especially potent
marijuana, lets say, over a period of 24 hours one weekend and then
face a test 5-7 days later your chances of passing the test decrease
dramatically.
There?s no way really to predict pass or fail odds on any person much
less the population at large; there are simply too many factors to
consider (degree of intoxication, rate of your metabolism, tolerance,
frequency of intake, fluid intake, amount of marijuana, potency of
marijuana, and length of time you've been a user, height, weight age,
body mass, gender, etc). As I said though in order to establish ?some?
type of consistency the general rule of thumb is that 30 days is a
safe span of time to purse traces of marijuana from your system for
almost all people and 3 days is safe for a few who partake only
occasionally.
It is also important to know that if your employer is testing for
50ng/ml or greater or if the employer is looking for a much smaller
cutoff. In other words, the general rule of thumb may not apply in a
situation where an entity is testing for 10ng/ml because this is
virtually a negligible level while 50ng/ml is the most commonly used
test. Suffice it to say that in the explanation I have provided, this
30-day period is recommended in order to insure that one?s metabolism
has time to purge his system to an acceptable level of 50ng/ml. A more
sensitive test of course would require more time, but fortunately
these more sensitive tests are extremely rare and not commonly used by
most civilian industries.
How can you speed up the process?
Don?t use drugs. This is a given, but since it is probably not
practical in your case you should greatly limit these indiscretions as
mush as possible and when you do smoke, don?t binge. In short, if you
feel you must do it, be responsible otherwise and practice
self-restraint.
Increase your metabolism. Physical activity will speed up your
metabolism and help eliminate the traces of drugs in your system.
There is nothing about this that unnaturally hides the fact that you
are a drug user, but in reality it actually helps to physically purge
your system of the drug. You can also increase your metabolism by
taking on a high calorie diet in conjunction with increased physical
activity. Some experts say that consuming mass quantities of high
calorie food will temporarily increase one?s metabolic rate by up to
10 percent, but of source this is not necessarily a healthy approach
for the long terms because it can cause heart disease, obesity and a
number of other problems. Basically what I am saying here is that if
you are ?dirty? stop smoking, exercise with intensity, and eat big and
drink lots and lots of water until your test.
Finally, if you feel that you are jeopardy of failing a test you can
always test YOURSELF first. This site from the US FOOD AND DRUG
ADMINISTRATION explains home testing and even they have suggested that
the ?safe? period is 3-7 days with the disclaimer that this period is
not relative in all cases depending on the many factors I have listed
above.
