Thanks just4fun2-ga, I have found many places where I can buy Windows 95 - but as I mention above I'm looking for a specific version. If the vendor does not list the version (as in the case with the ebay link), then the answer doesn't help. |

May I suggest you email the seller or sellers (as I saw many for sale) and ask which version they are selling or if they can get you the version you need. |

Good idea - however my intention for posting this question here is to save myself the trouble of having to do that and to find an answer more quickly. :) If you search for "windows 95" on google, you'll see plenty of adword ads where you can buy Windows 95. I'm not sure if first verion of Windows 95 has a version number printed on it - it seems very few people know what they are selling. |

I *think* you'll need to look for 950 OEM. It needs to have dates of (I think) September '95. I just looked at what I have, and I only have "B" (1996) and "2.5" (1997) which is 95 with USB support. I'm pretty sure that what you are looking for is the version that was pre-installed on computers when Win95 first came out, and probably not available to the average person as (IIRC) Win95a was essentially the only version available on shelves. This was Windows 95 Upgrade, specifically for Windows 3.x users. Windows 95B was released initially as an OEM-only release, much to the consternation of not just a few. It had a few new features, including a bit more stability and support for either USB or native FAT32. It has been almost 10 years, so my recollection is a bit fuzzy. I think USB was the key. Anyway, there was a feature or two in "B" that "A" didn't have, and there was no immediate upgrade path for those who installed "A". Some people tried to Install with "B" over "A", but there were some significant problems, especially with respect to registry and network .dll's. I only know a bit about this 'cause I did technical support on this stuff for a long while and had to have multiple versions of CABs depending on who I serviced, and of course nobody had their installation media (some 15 floppy disks). If anything was a plus, "A" was a very close drop-in replacement for "950", at least as far as the CABs go. Hmm... I've got some access to some Gateway OEM disks, They have WFW3.11/Win95 dual install, but I haven't checked their version. I guess this probably doesn't help too much, but the other thing I'd suggest is taking a look at some old Windows\Options\Cabs directories and checking the dates. |

More info on what I just spewed about is here: http://www.usbman.com/Win95%20USB%20Guide.htm. Oops July 11, 1995, not September 1995. |

sanfranguy-ga: After an hour of searching, I found my old Windows 95 CD, but it is is an UPGRADE version (upgrades from Windows 3.x any may upgrade from MS DOS 6.x also - I currently have no spare hardware/VM to check this). I also happen to have the old MS-DOS and Windows for Workgroups (v3.11) on 3.5" floppy disks (all originals) and even found the "Introducing Microsoft Windows 95" booklet. The upgrade version is most likely "Windows 95 4.00.950" (from brief searches of the web). EULA says it is OK to transfer it, if all qualifying products are included and you agree to the same EULA (those were days of some innocence). == The Win95 subdirectory contains these files 07/11/1995 04:50a <DIR> . 07/11/1995 04:50a <DIR> .. 07/11/1995 04:50a 496 DELTEMP.COM 07/11/1995 04:50a 72,246 DOSSETUP.BIN 07/11/1995 04:50a 46,656 EXTRACT.EXE 07/11/1995 04:50a 441,905 MINI.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 1,074,688 PRECOPY1.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 724,732 PRECOPY2.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 7,302 README.TXT 07/11/1995 04:50a 920 SAVE32.COM 07/11/1995 04:50a 134,738 SCANDISK.EXE 07/11/1995 04:50a 995 SCANDISK.PIF 07/11/1995 04:50a 4,438 SCANPROG.EXE 07/11/1995 04:50a 5,184 SETUP.EXE 07/11/1995 04:50a 34,612 SETUP.TXT 07/11/1995 04:50a 45,145 SMARTDRV.EXE 07/11/1995 04:50a 1,472 SUHELPER.BIN 07/11/1995 04:50a 537 WB16OFF.EXE 07/11/1995 04:50a 1,306,112 WIN95_02.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_03.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_04.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_05.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_06.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_07.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_08.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_09.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_10.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_11.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_12.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_13.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_14.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_15.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 2,048,000 WIN95_16.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 1,067,059 WIN95_17.CAB 07/11/1995 04:50a 159,504 WINSETUP.BIN 07/11/1995 04:50a 14,144 XMSMMGR.EXE 34 File(s) 33,814,885 bytes 2 Dir(s) 0 bytes free == Let me know if/how you want to proceed.
