My Sony VAIO PCG-FX120 notebook computer has stopped working. Upon
boot it displays the "Sony Vaio" logo, then goes to a blank screen and
halts.

The day before this happend I did a full system restore. It rebooted
fine a number of times as I uninstalled unused OEM software. The last
thing I did with the computer was delete the extra online services
setup files.

I have tried booting from CD-ROM with a recovery disk, the same blank
screen comes up. I have tried booting from a Windows ME recovery
floppy disk and the same blank screen comes up.

I have seen a similar problem to this before, where removing the power
supply and the battery for a short while and then rebooting fixed the
issue. This does NOT work for fix my current problem. I have tried
holding left control, escape and other keys while powering on the
unit.

How do I fix this computer?

Note: I have also tried resetting the BIOS to default settings.

Note: "Take it to a computer repair shop" will not be considered a valid answer.

Hi swamphandy

You may find the thread here interesting -

Sony Vaio laptop wont boot?
..."I immediately unscrewed the bottom plate and applied pressure with
my fingers to the ram chips and turned it on."...
"Well folk's got some good news after removing a stick of 128 ram i
had added and it booted up great i then did all the upgrades(I
installed win xp pro) and the hardware and bios upgrades did a couple
of cold boots then added memory back and so far after about twenty
boots not a problem . I think what happened which I did notice is when
the memmory gtt's hot which it does to the touch on outside of the
case it expands contracts and it can or did come loose causeing a bad
connection. I really think the way the memmory slots are is bad design
to have the connection just lay against the memmory chip I think is a
problem waiting to happen."

Thanks Hummer, but that did not do it.

I read all the linked material. I re-seated my RAM, and tried putting
my one 64MB RAM chip into the number 2 slot. Still no boot. Just an
illuminated black screen.

NOTE: I have two identical Viao notebooks. I took the RAM out of my
second unit and tried it in the non-booting unit. Still no boot.
