Dear dogbite-ga;
Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question. A
perfect solution (and a rather cool ?bar-like? design too I might add)
is the YACKER-TRACKER:
YACKER-TRACKER
http://www.tuffware.com/misc/av/light.html
This device comes in the form of a very authentic looking traffic
light design that can be mounted on the wall and is intended for
alerting a room to noise exceeding acceptable levels. The device is
customizable and adjustable from 40 dB to 120 dB and when the noise
level has been breached the steady green light goes off and the red
light comes on. For that especially noisy crowd, this device even has
A SIREN (which can be deactivated if you?d prefer not to use it) that
will let even the loudest guests know that they need to hold it down.
The Yacker-Tracker retails for about $33 - $50 depending on where you buy it

Thank you for your answer. I found this thread reviewing the yakker
tracker, and I'm worried that it isn't what I want:
http://teachers.net/mentors/librarians/topic1248/1.03.04.19.51.03.html
In particular, it seems that the device doesn't do any averaging, so
little loud peaks will set it off. Do you happen to have another
suggestion?
This Talk Light Too looks good:

I'm worried that people won't notice when the light goes off though --
I'd like it to chirp, if possible.

I'm not familiar with ANY device that "does averaging", especially for
the $100-$200 range. Peaks will set off ALL devices that are been set
to detect noise in excess of the preset decibel level if a sudden peak
nise exceeds that limit. If you read on about Yacker-Tracker you'll
see that in order to help counter this unavoidable fact it allows 20db
"OVER" what you actually set the thing to detect before it will begin
warning the room.

You asked for a fairly inexpensive noise meter that has a display that
cannot be missed by a group of beer drinking card players. I'd have to
say that if the beer drinkers don't notice a flashing red light and a
siren, the noise isn't the real problem - their clearly drinking way
too much beer.

hi tutuzdad-ga,
i'm not saying that you gave me a bad answer. i'm only saying that i
read some reviews that said the yakker tracker can be triggered by
somebody scooting back their chair, but not by steady loud
conversation.
i'm going to buy the talklight -- i've found out that it does beep
when the light glows red. also, it does averaging of the sound and is
not triggered by sharp peaks, but rather persistant talking.
thank you for your answer though -- you were quick to respond and
pointed me to a path that led me to what i wanted.
