Following an upgrade to windows 2000 on our new dell server, we are
encountering printing problems associated with a DOS based application
program. We have a Kyocera FS3800 network printer. No similar
problems experienced Prior to windows upgrade.
We are going nuts with this problem.

Hello HM,
It looks like a change in the server name, printer, path, or driver
may have caused the redirection of your workstation printer port to
your server to break. Here is some information on how to fix this
problem.

First, you need to make sure you are using a PCL driver on your server
for the printer. Most DOS apps do not generate postscript, although if
you are using a UNIX app ported to DOS, the reverse may be true. Out
of all the PDLs (Page Description Languages) your printer speaks, the
PCL5e driver will most likely be the best bet for DOS printing. More
details on your printer and its drivers are available from Kyocera.

Since the UNC path to the printer may have changed, you will need to
capture the output of an LPT port to the correct printer. Microsoft
explains this in brief detail in KB54498.

With a Windows XP version in KB314499:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314499

A much more detailed tutorial on the finer points of the NET USE
command is available at this website.

Setting up Print Capture in Windows NT and 2000

So, to see existing ports on your workstation type:

NET USE

If you decide you need to delete a port pointing to the old server use:

NET USE LPTx /delete

Where LPTx is the name of the port you want to delete.

To map a new pcl printer to a dos port use:

NET USE LPTx \\newserver\printername /persistent:yes

Substitute in the LPTx for the port you want to use, the next
available one or the old port you used with your old server would be
fine. Replace \\newserver\printername with the UNC path to your
printer. You can obtain this with the following command:

NET VIEW \\servername

Where servername is your new server's name.

HM, this is most likely related to LPT: problems. The client machines
may need to "re-capture" the network printer to their local LPT: port.
If the DOS application resides on the server itself, you may have to
create a new printer connection and configure this printer for
everyone. I know the LPT: port will be connected to a local share,
but I don't believe there are many options. Take a look at this MS
article to help you out.

Good Luck!
