I currently live in San Diego and am considering a job offer to Vancouver WA. I have not visited the city yet, but am trying to gather some info before I decide if I should make the trip. I know Portland looks like a lot of fun and is fairly close by however I have to reside in WA for state income tax reasons. And also, the job is in the northern section of Vancouver. I am trying to find out if there are many single younger people (late 20's or early 30's) like myself, or is this more of a bedroom community for families and older folks. Also, is there a more desirable part of Vancouver for younger single people to rent an apartment/condo ? Are there many bars/clubs in the downtown section of Vancouver ? The neighborhoods in Portland seem to be more expensive than Vancouver, so I am wondering how the two differ. I currently live in the beach area of San Diego so I am used to alot of people, traffic, crazy nights out in the town. Portland sounds very cool, but I am worried Vancouver might be a little too sleepy for me ? Statistics are fine but ideally I would like to get advice from somebody who has lived in the area. Thanks.!! |

I used to live in Portland, have visited Vancouver and am in the age group you mentioned. In addition, I'm currently moving back to Portland. In the past, Vancouver was fairly sleepy and the downtown was rather seedy (pawn shops, closed shops, etc.) It is my understanding that things have greatly improved, and many people commute from Vancouver to Portland because it is so much cheaper. That said, Vancouver is not as active, in my opinion, as Portland, and has less to offer, in the way of shops, activities and restaurants, thus the lower price. But the commute to downtown Portland is pretty easy, either with car and I think even public transportation, so if you were going stir crazy, you would have a fun, hip place to visit. While this is not a definitive answer, especially since I haven't been to Vancouver in a while, I thought you might like one more perspective. |
