I have had this problem as long as I can remember. Whenever I do any cardio activity it happens, but it's much more of a problem when running and when outside where it's colder. I just went running today and I had to drain my nose (covering one nostril and blowing to drain the other one) probably 5 or 6 times and spit at least 50 times. It's incredibly irritating and it makes running even harder than it already is for a person with pectus excavatum (caved in chest). My doctor told me it was caused by the air (often cold air) I am breathing in so rapidly and to use Sudafed Nasal Decongestant to help it, but it didn't make much of a difference. Are there any solutions to this problem? Over the counter drugs, prescription drugs, home rememdies...I'll try whatever. If you find a solution that significantly makes a difference, I'll tip you the max allowed amount. No joke. It means that much to me. If you need any further information, please let me know. |

I found no miracle cures, I'm afraid, but the following web page seems to bear directly on your complaint, giving a clear and concise explanation of the underlying physiological mechanism. American Running: Runny Nose http://www.americanrunning.org/displayindustryarticle.cfm?articlenbr=1675 The European nasal spray sounds enticing, but who knows when it will arrive on our shores? I don't know if I would use it myself. I do find myself horking and spitting at a greater rate than usual when I go running, especially in cold weather, but I figure it's just nature's way. leapinglizard |

Interesting, I wonder when that was written. I'd like to try that drying medication. The only difference I see between myself and the person with the question on that website is that my nose doesn't get drippy with a clear watery liquid. It's very thick and stringy and it gets hard to clear my throat, especially while trying to run. Thanks! |
