Hi all,

This is probably easy to figure out, but it has eluded me so far.

I'm using IE 6.0 provided by Compaq as my web browser, and I would
like to know how to configure it so that the status bar always shows
by default. Right now, I have to go in and "turn it on" for every
window I open. Since I am using a dial-up connection (no cable out
here yet) this is important to me. Can anyone tell me how to set the
status bar to "on" by default? Thanks!

Technical stuff: my version of IE says: 6.0.2800.xpsp2
OS: WinXP Pro

Howdy thistlewind-ga,

There appears to be several ways to correct this problem, but I want you
to try the "easy" way first, and see if that works for you.

- Open just one (and nor more than one) Internet Explorer window
- Right click on the Toolbar area and a menu will appear
- Make sure that "Lock the Toolbars" is not checked
- Click it to uncheck it if it is checked
- Click on View, then click/check the Status Bar if it is not checked
- Right click on the Toolbar area
- Click on "Lock the Toolbars"

Close Internet Explorer, then open it up and other IE windows and see if
that does the trick, and I will post this an answer. If it does not work,
we can try the "hard" way.

Hi denco-ga,

Thanks for the speedy response. I was very excited when I read your
"quick fix" because it just looked like it was going to work.

Unfortunately, I didn't get off the hook so easily. I tried your
suggestion and the result is that the first IE window I open now has
the status bar showing, as I wished, but any subsequent IE windows
opened do not.

I guess I may have to try it the "hard" way. (Why was this process
actually easier in older versions of IE? "Progress" I suppose...) :/

Thanks again, TW

Howdy TW,

The "hard" way. You might want to print this out before trying this.

The following should "lock" the status bar.

- With (only one) IE open, click View
- Make sure "Status Bar" is checked
- Right-click on the IE Toolbar
- Make sure "Lock the Toolbars" is checked
- Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
- Right click on the Start Button
- Click on Explore
- Click View and make sure "Status Bar" is checked
- Right-click on Windows Explorer Toolbar
- Make sure "Lock the Toolbars" is checked
- Click Tools then Folder Options and then the View tab
- Click the "Apply to all folders" button
- Click OK if this gives you another dialogue question
- Hold down the Ctrl key and click the close button (upper right)
- Reopen IE to any page, right-click on a link
- Select "Open in New Window" and the Status Bar should remain visible.
- Click on the Start Button, select RUN, and type REGEDIT and hit enter
- If not open, click on the plus sign next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER
- If not open, click on the plus sign next to Software
- If not open, click on the plus sign next to Microsoft
- If not open, click on the plus sign next to Internet Explorer
- If not open, click on the folder marked Main
- Verify that these Registry entries exist:

"Show_StatusBar" ... "yes"
"Show_URLinStatusBar" ... "yes"

- Select "Show_StatusBar"
- Go to "Permissions..." from Edit menu
- Click "Advanced"
- Select your user name in the list and click the "Edit" button
- Find "Set value" and check the "Deny"
- Click on OK, etc. to get back to your desktop

This last part should make this lock "stick" and you would have
to uncheck the "Deny" box if you ever didn't want the status bar.

Whew! Give the above a try and see if that works for you.
