Hi lawman1305,

Thank you for your interesting question.

An autopsy which is also known as a post-mortem examination or
necropsy, is a medical investigation of a corpse (dead body). The term
"autopsy" comes from the Latin for "seeing with your own eyes" and
"Necropsy" is from the Latin for "seeing a dead body".

Here is an interview conducted with a Medical Examiner, explaining
what they do, how they do it, and what they look for.

actually i think they look for cause of death - examine the internal
organs for natural cause of death and which organ was involved - like
looking at the heart to check for a heart attack ( it can actually be
'seen'), or signs of foul play such as fractures, bruises, injuries.
They also can check the blood levels for drugs, overdose. this is my
best partially informed guess.
