Definition of the Fight or flight reaction:

?The set of processes that occur in the body when it is confronted
with some form of physical or mental stress. For example, if a person
is faced with danger (as from a vicious animal about to attack), the
nervous system signals for adrenaline and other hormones to be
released into the blood. These hormones prepare the body either to
confront the attacking animal or to flee to safety (thus, ?fight or
flight?). Changes in the body include increased heart rate, dilated
pupils of the eye (to improve vision), and increased supply of blood
to the muscles (to prepare the body for action).?

Fight or flight

?Stress is a perception - a normal reaction to a real or imagined
threat. It is essential to our survival because it causes immediate
changes in our bodies that help us fight for our lives or run to
escape. These metabolic changes are called the "fight or flight"
response. We have all heard the stories of people who found
extraordinary strength in dangerous times, like the mother who
literally lifted the back of a car off her toddler or the child who
ran for miles to get help for his injured father.?

?One of the survivors of the World Trade Center attack was caught in
the jet fuel explosion when the first plane hit. He was enveloped by
flames, which caused severe burns over most of his body. Despite
extreme pain, he found the strength to walk down 83 flights of stairs
to safety! The fight or flight response may have saved his life.?

?For example, a mother who sees her toddler wandering out onto the
road, in the path of an oncoming car, experiences healthy fear which
gives her speed and strength to rescue her child.?

?My dad was working on a car we were about to sell. He was under the
car and it was jacked up with the jack. Well, it was raining and the
jack started to slip... THe jack finally slipped and the car fell on
him! My grandpa and and I were the only ones there. We ran to the car
as fast as we could. My grandpa, who is 65, and me actually lifted a
car so my dad could get out. I don't think I cold ever do it again. He
only had 2 broken ribs and 11 stitches. I am sooooooo glad that the
car didnt weigh as much as it should have, seeing as we had the who
transmission system out, but it was still heavy.?

April 12, 2004: I Just Lifted A Bed Off My Daughter's Head

?She was reaching for her ball and it got stuck. I began to panic
internally when I realized I couldn't get it unstuck because she was
squirming. Suddenly the story about the woman who lifted a car off of
her child flashed into my mind, and the next thing I knew, I had a
queen size bed with all the trimmings hoisted about a foot in the air.
Nothing like a little fear of neck dislocation to practice pumping up
that adrenalin.?
