How do I set SharePoint 2.0 to use an external smtp server. When I add users to my main SharePoint site, it adds them but can?t send the welcome message. The error I get is: The user or users have been added successfully, but there was an error in sending the e-mail message. The server may not be set up correctly to send e-mail. To verify that e-mail is configured correctly, contact your server administrator. I told it to use an external SMTP server, but it isn?t working. I went into IIS, went to the properties of the default site, which got me into the SharePoint Central Administration. The I clicked on Configure E-Mail Server Settings. I entered an external server (a hosted pop3/smtp server we use for junk mail) in the box labeled: ?Outbound SMTP server?. I also added my personal email address on that server for the boxes labeled ?From e-mail address?, and ?Reply-to e-mail address:?. What is very strange is that it doesn?t have anywhere to put a password, so how will it authenticate? I prefer not to run a smtp server on my server (which is a windows server 2003 box that also run terminal services, webdav sites, and sharepoint 2.0). What to do? If there is now way to run with a external smtp server, then please tell me how to setup the smtp server in IIS to only replay for sharepoint and other programs running on that server only. thanx in advnce | |

sherpaj-ga: Looks like you've pretty much found the answer already yourself. The problem here is that Sharepoint can only use its internal/built-in SMTP server or an external SMTP server that accepts anonymous relaying to generate the confirmation e-mails. As you've already mentioned, this requires that your external SMTP server be able to be configured for anonymous relaying of messages that come from the Sharepoint server. Since your external SMTP server will not allow anonymous relaying, then it looks like you are stuck. Sorry! |

You cheat. Basically you run the SMTP service that comes with IIS, so you have an SMTP server running on localhost. It's reasonably secure by default, you can tweak it by start up the IIS admin tool, and looking at the properties for the SMTP server, then click the access tab and set the connection and relay properties accordingly. Basically you want to set the properties under connection to be only the list below and add 127.0.0.1 to the list. Under relay do the same. Try sending an email through it to make sure it works. Now, if you want to go through the external server for whatever reason you can set the SMTP server to use a smart host, which causes it to pick up emails sent to itself, then forward them on to the external server for processing. You can set the username and password used to connect to the smart host by clicking the delivery tab in properties and clicking outbound security. You then specify the address of the relay server by clicking the advanced button on the delivery tab and entering the FQDN in the smart host box. If you only have an IP you must enter it in the format [IP] |
