A back-up question: Can you in any way burn files from the hardrive to
any CD or DVD-media with filenames up to 256 characters under Windows
98 (note: not Windows 98 SE) and Windows XP, so that the filenames on
the CD or DVD-media will remane up to 256 characters?
Best regards!

trythisform-ga:

The 'easiest' way to accomplish this is the use a 3rd-party
compression utility like WinZIP to create an archive file containing
your files with the long filenames, then burn the archive to the CD.
In WinXP, the archive will be browseable in Explorer; in Win98, you
will need to view the archive using WinZIP (or other ZIP program) to
view the files.

Some CD/DVD burning software will allow a slight variation from the
Joliet standard to allow filenames up to 212 characters; however,
CDs/DVDs burned in this manner are usually only usable on systems
running Win2000/XP.

Please let me know which method meets your needs the best, so that I
can provide you with a more-detailed Answer to your question.

I would like to handle the back-up procedure as easy as possible.

Using a Winzip-like software will complicate the back-up procedure. It
will also take more time.

If there is a possibility - only under Windows XP - to burn files with
212 characters filenames, I am ready to use only Windows XP and not
Windows 98 at all.

If you have a solution, please let me know!

Which CD/DVD burning software are you currently using?
