Dear Kanebridge,
I wouldn't think that US defence plans are made public. From those
that were made public, there is no indication of any plans to instate
a naval base in Lebanon.
If I may estimate, there is also not much chance of it (well, erality
is alwasy weirder than whatever estimation I have...):
- US forces have been attacked in the past in Lebanon, and the forces
responsible for this attack are still quiet powerful in the country;
- The country has no strategic importance, when there are
Mediterranean allies all over the place, incl. Israel and Turkey in
that geographic region (and Gulf countries in the Gulf);
- There is also no operative importance to Lebanon - in order to
assist the operations in Iraq or elsewhere. The only importance would
be if the US decides to attack the country itself, in order to root
out Hizbullah, or to attack Syria;
- The US Navy does not tend to have *more* bases opened, but to have
them closed, modern technology today enables them to work from afar;
In other words, the US gains nothing of it. Sounds to me like the
usual conspiracies available in Arab press. |
