I need a free list of all of the cities broken down by county in the
united states. If I could get it in the format of:
city, county, state
that would be most excellent. I tried some of the other solutions I
saw in the google answers but wasn't able to get this information
precisely. one solution I saw in google answers gave a list of all
kinds of extraneous information and didn't really list the cities very
well.

Incidentally, I just used that list that was in the other answer and
it doesn't, unfortunately, provide a list of all of the cities in all
of the states.
The clarification is just to point out I want a list of all cities (or
at least ones with a population of 10k or more) broken down by county
and state.
Single links to 50 different state sites won't help me much as I've
found that all over the place and could put the data together if I had
enough time.
I want a single source for the data. $15 tip if you can get it to me
today :) (20 sep 2004).
If you can't find it broken down with counties, I would settle for
just city/state but there's no tip for that. :)

Hi Geoffrey,
You can obtain this information from the National Association of
counties website. I am not sure whether you have tried this solution.
1. Go to the "Find a County" page
http://www.naco.org/Template.cfm?Section=Data_and_Demographics&Template=/cffiles/counties/city_srch.cfm
2. Select a state from drop-down menu, e.g. Alabama.
3. You will then see a list of counties (67 counties for Alabama).
Click on one of the county names, e.g. "Autauga County".
4. Then click on the link "Cities in Autauga County, AL". You should
then see a listing of 6 cities for Autauga County, AL. The listing
includes cities, towns, boroughs and communities based on the US
Postal Service mail delivery.

LIke I said, I'm hoping to get it in ONE file. The answer is
partially helpful but it's like most stuff I've found where I can only
get part of the data and then have to put it all together. With the
link you provided I'd have to go to a lot of work to put it all into a
usable format.
There's got to be a list of the data out there somewhere that I can
get all at once without having to massage the data a bunch.

in the US in the format:
city name / state / county
Please download and save this file to your local system, as it will
not be stored permanently at the above link.
The original source for the information is the USGS "US Concise" file
from the geonames site at:

This is a great geographical resource...you may want to explore some
of the other information sources available at this site.

Hi...glad to hear this was what you needed.
In order to create the data set, I downloaded the US Concise file from
USGS, and imported it into an Excel spreadsheet.
Once in Excel, I sorted the file based on the type-of-location column
that includes the designation "ppl", which stands for "populated
place" and indicates the cities. Once I had these sorted, I deleted
all the non-ppl designations, and I then deleted all the columns
except for the three you needed.
