Hello again Peterstone1,

I located an excellent study by ComScore Media Solutions and the
Internet Advertising Bureau regarding click-through rates for the
sponsored ads that appear on the right side of the search results.

Title:Measuring the Effectiveness of Sponsored Search Marketing
Date: July 2003
By: James Lamberti, Vice President, Media Solutions

The cost of the full study report is $995, but you can access a pdf
file that presents the basic findings here: (40 pages)
www.iab.net/events/pdf/search/comscore-MediaSolution.pdf

Relevant findings:

Page 12:

Click-through rates are over 4 times higher than Free Search

Across all categories, an 18.3% click through rate was recorded for
the paid search results. For free search results, the click through
rate was 4.3%.

Page13:

Click rates vary significantly between industries

In the travel sector, paid search had a click through rate of 16.1%
while free search had a 5.4% click through rate.

In the financial services sector, the click through rate for paid
search was 26.3%, compared to just 3% for the free search.

==============================================

According to Google, Adwords text ads have an average click through
rate 4-5 times higher than banner ads.

I've been using Google Adwords since it was first introduced and I've
found it to be very effective for testing ads. My best click through
rate so far has been 36% and the lowest being 0.98%! On average my ads
get a 20% click through rate on very focused keywords and search terms
and 6% on general popular relevant keywords.

There is a link to the report at bottom of the following webpage.

Right click on the link and select save as.

That should work!

Sorry - I sent in your 2-star rating before I found your response to
my request. I'm a new user of Google Answers, and it was not very
clear at all that you had responded, since your answer was 2 screens
down. I also thought I would get an auto-notification via email or
something. If there is a way for me to change my rating, please let
me know, as i didn't see any easy way to do it on the site.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

the most valuable part of the answer was a link to a 40 page
supporting document, but the link didn't work, and i never received a
response to my followup request for another link to find this
document. too bad - he's done well before.
