I have heard said in the name of Sigmnud Freued that one of the
strongest drives in man is to be great. I am looking to know if this
is what he said, and any other information about this issue.

I doubt that what you remember hearing is accurate. Freud in large
part built his career with the premise than man's sexual urges were
his greatest drive.

I wonder if it wasn't "procreate" not "be great"

Hi Barry and Tutuzdad,

I'm certain that Freud's term to which you refer is rather "to
create". That is, in all contexts of the word. Primarily pro-creation
as suggested by T.

Perhaps our resident Pink version of Freud could shed further light
upon the subject.

If in fact this line wasn't a postulate of Frued, does anyone know
which philosphers or pyschologists subscribe to this concept?

As I understand it, Freud thought men have a drive for creation and
for destruction. The creative drive included the sex drive and the
destructive drive accounts for our violent tendencies. The destructive
drive was added later due in large part to the nazis.

If you are looking for a drive for greatness check out the humanists
(Abraham Maslow, Carl Rogers, Rollo May, . They thought that our
greatest drive is for self-actualization. That is, we are driven to be
the best that we can possibly be.
