I would like any information available about the "3438th Ordnance
Medium Automotive Maintenance Company" which arrived in CBI Theatre
(mainly India) 18 Oct 43 and left there 12 Dec 45. A Colonel Steiger
was commanding officer. A complete answer will include at least 5
first/last names of unit members, specific location(s) by city/town
during its deployment, and some history - either anectdotal or
official. This much information will get $50. The more unique and
specific information I receive, the more I will pay. Get me as much
information as you can - I'm not in a big hurry. I would rather have
lots of info than have it quickly. |

One question: Are you quite sure the unit number was the 3438th?
Any other background or context that you have would be helpful to
assist researchers in pinning down the history here.
As an FYI, there's quite a detailed account of the operations of Auto
Maintenance Companies in the far corners of the globe during WWII --
including India -- at this military history link here:

Motor Vehicle Assembly and Delivery
I'll let you know if anything else turns up, but in the mean time, any
additional background you can provide would be quite helpful.
Thanks.

Thank you for your interest in my quest. Yes, I'm sure the number is
3438th - I copied the entire text straight from my father's discharge
papers and it was on the separation record as well. He did not talk
about his service other than to tell us the funny things that happened
while he was on weekend pass. Now he is gone. Twice I have written to
the Army veterans archives address and have received no response
whatsoever. I will copy here all the other unit-related information on
the separation record: Place of Separation - Sep Cen Camp Atterbury
Ind; Battles and Campaigns - India Burma; Decorations and Citations -
Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon w/ 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Ribbon,
Meritorius Unit Award, Victory Medal; Demobilization 15 Dec 44. I
found a map of "Replacement Depot No. One, Malir-Karachi-India". I
also found a piece of paper titled "Headquarters Intermediate General
Depot" dated 24 Oct 45, labeled "Special Orders No. 274" saying the
3438th Ord MAM Co. is assigned to Co. C, 853rd Engr Bn., APO 629.
These are all the official records I've been able to locate. I've
searched the web for a couple of years with every text string I can
imagine, and finally turned to this paid service. I hope you are more
successful. In the meantime, I very much appreciate the link you sent
me - at least that will give me a general idea of the kind of support
the unit provided to the war effort.
