I'm looking for a list of Seattle retail businesses that are
distinquished by their rich personality. The list would be limited to
hole-in-the-wall or mom and pop joints, biker bars, tackle shops, book
stores, etc. I'm not interested in larger or chain businesses. The
businesses I'm looking for might sell a cool tshirt - but don't have
business cards or a web site. 25 businesses would be plenty for my
needs... but quality counts!

Hello! We at Google Answers are excited to answer this question for
you! Upon initial inpsection, I knew exactly what I needed to do in
order to sate your search. When visiting Seattle, I discovered ONE
thing for sure: Seattle-folk have their "favorite" of everything, and
in order to qualify for "favorite," can NOT be corporate, which is
right in line with your request.

Therefore, I began with my search by looking for "Best Of" lists in
the city of Seattle. This was quite a fruitful search, producing no
chain store responses or links to business' Websites. Just good ol'
quirky Seattle shops.

The first one I preused was Seattle Weekly's list. If you don't know,
Seattle Weekly is the city's #1 alternative newspaper weekly, and
received a LOT of attention for their thorough coverage of events and
issues. I know, because I am a journalist, and I follow them pretty
closely.
For 2004, here is their list:
http://www.seattleweekly.com/features/0431/040804_bestof_ballotwinners.php

If course, not everything on here is what you are looking for, so I
researched, and found the following businesses to have the most
character/personality, according to my subjective opinion:

1. Elliott Bay Book Store
http://www.elliottbaybook.com/about/index.jsp
Above is a link to, yes, their Web site. I have really not found many
businesses these days that do NOT have one. In any case, you can read
about their colorful, meaningful history and even read their diatribe
on corporate vs. independent book stores.
