I am going to take a stab at an "official" answer for this interesting question. Geocities was started in 1995 by David Bohnett as Beverly Hills Internet. He soon decided to link real places to cities. BHI changed to GeoCities in Decemeber of 1995. A press release from GeoCities read in part: "The homesteading program enables anyone with access to the Internet to have a free Personal Home Page, or GeoPage, within our cityscapes", Mr. Bohnett said. "Because GeoCities are nurtured by communication and sustained by commerce, we are developing new media to endow GeoCities with a rich sense of community, place and interactivity, and also originating new ways to measure our audiences for advertiserrs," he said. "This is the next wave of the net -- not just information but habitation." A GeoCities History http://www.geocities.com/dunric/geo1.html Without speaking to Mr. Bohnett directly, I think this is about as close to official as you are going to see. It's not particularly definitive but this might help... "It reminds me of the age old debate of "How to pronounce 'Geocities.'" That argument ended up with someone actually calling the Geocities offices to see how the phone operators answered the phone. ("Hello, Geo Cities," not "Hello, Geocities [g-os-ities]," just so you know. You probably already do, anyways.)" source: The GIF Pronunciation Page http://www.olsenhome.com/gif/ |

Well, I thought that too, Pink. However, a few folks (perhaps facetiously) claim that it rhymes with "atrocities." http://www.tbtf.com/archive/1998-08-17.html http://groups.google.com/groups?q=+%22geocities+rhymes+with&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&c2coff=1&selm=3A991745%40MailAndNews.com&rnum=6 |

And the reason I hade to ask this question. A friend of mine say [g-os-ities], but I have always Said, GEO Cities because the C is Capital in a single word. If the C in cities were lowercase then maybe [g-os-ities]. |

I would go with the Geo Cities being that in it's original form, websites were classified by city names for their content, i.e., entertaiment sites were in "Hollywood", etc. |
