Question ID: 405025
I am planning extended vacation travel in Germany, first stop
Frankfurt. My company has a bank account in Switzerland but none in
Germany. I wish to wire transfer about $10,000.00 from my company's
Swiss account to a bank in Frankfurt prior to my arrival in Frankfurt
and then be able to withdraw this amount upon my arrival. Is this
possible and how?

jackson11,

If you don't have a bank account in Germany, you can still wire money
to a German bank via Western Union. In particular, most branches of
the Deutsche Postbank and many branches of Reisebank will accept
Western Union money transfers. There are several locations convenient
to the Frankfurt city center where you can receive such a wire
transfer.

So the receiving end is covered, but to send the money may be a little
more complicated, depending on your choice of Swiss bank. Western
Union agents in Switzerland include the Swiss Post Office (Die
Schweizerische Post) and again the Reisebank. If you don't have an
account with either of these institutions, I imagine they would still
be willing to relay a money transfer from your own bank, although
you'll have to contact your personal bank officer directly to find out
the terms of such a transfer.

Do you consider this a complete answer to your question?

If I were you I would discuss this with both banks before the transfer
is done. Are you absolutely sure that the bank in Frankfurt would
hold your money until you arrive there? Maybe you want to consider
not having the transfer done until after you arrive in Frankfurt so
you can pick up the money immediately.

Yes, 4keith, that's the whole idea behind Western Union. The agent in
Frankfurt will hold the wire transfer and release the client's funds
when he arrives to pick it up. There is no difference in security
whether the transfer is arranged hours or weeks in advance.
