I need a gift for a Francophile and I'm thinking of
some kind of publication, preferably monthly or bimonthly, from
France/Canada/Switzerland/wherever. One interesting and unique
possibility would be a good zine, but I spent half an hour searching
(and I know French) and couldn't find any list of French zines, if
they even exist. Otherwise I would be interested in an art magazine
or a Time/Newsweek type current events magazine. This is for my
sister who's in her twenties, so it should be something visually
appealing and fun to read. Thanks!

Sidesway --

Though Life Magazine is not as popular here as it once was, the French
weekly Paris-Match has a picture + news format that's similar,
easy-to-read and popular. Their Flash website is a good
representation of what's in the weekly magazine, though the navigation
on the Flash page is difficult. Click on "Abonnez-vous au magazine"
for subscription information. It's $149/year if you live in
Etats-Unis d'Amérique:

The French Cultural Center has an excellent website with many
programs. They include a list of French arts publications (and their
websites). Note that they also have music, film and other links on
the page too:

Probably the best-known fashion magazine in France is Elle, which I
believe has an English edition too:
Elle Magazine for Women
http://www.elle.fr/

Elle is a weekly and is $219 per year, mailed to the U.S. You'll find
that they use the same subscription manager as Paris-Match in
Plattsburgh, NY:

Similar to Elle -- but a monthly and more oriented to home and
fashion, is Marie Claire. The publishing house has a variety of
special issues but you want the original Marie Claire, which is 55
Euros per year, delivered:

The University of Lausanne in Switzerland has a nice online magazine
with a wide variety of current topics -- and it's free! Back issues
and electronic registration are here:

Le Monde is the Paris newspaper that's best compared with the New York
Times: well-written but grey. If your sister's a little more
interested in politics, they do a weekly called Le Monde Diplomatique:
http://www.monde-diplomatique.fr/

For several years, I received their weekly "Sélection du Monde," which
triages articles from the daily newspaper. It's 109 Euros delivered
to the U.S.:

This suggestion isn't really a magazine but a series of French comics
that deal with early French history in a lighter fashion. The Asterix
comics are witty and beautifully drawn:
Astérix

You can find the Asterix series in bookstores with any French
materials, as they're very popular with kids and adults. And there's
always Amazon.fr, which I've used many times:
Amazon France

Google search strategy:
Paris-Match
French cultural center
French news magazines

By the way, here are some other suggestions that may help you with gift ideas:
