Hello Shikibobo-ga,

The Port of Tampa is the largest driver of Tampa?s economy.  It?s
economic impact to the Tampa Bay region is reported to be $13 billion
and approximately 108,000 jobs. A large portion of the Port of Tampa?s
business is related to tourism.

Other major economic impact sectors are Tampa International Airport,
and MacDill Air Force Base and Defense Spending.

The largest employer in the Greater Tampa area is Hillsborough County
School District with more than 25,000 employees, followed by Verizon
Communications, the University of South Florida, and Hillsborough
County Government.

?Major Economic Impact Sectors ? The following are selective major
sectors of the local economy and their related economic impact on the
local community.

 - Port of Tampa ? The Port of Tampa?s direct impact on the Tampa Bay
region for 2001 was $6 billion with 34,658 workers who received $1.2
billion in wages. Counting direct, indirect and induced economic
impact, the total impact of the port on the Tampa Bay region is $13
billion, 107,900 jobs and $3.7 billion in wage income. Impact on Local
Property tax, sales tax and fuel tax is $170 million and $210 million
in State sales, corporate and other state revenues.

 - Tampa International Airport ? The airport directly and indirectly
supports nearly 18,000 jobs in the community and contributes more than
$1 billion annually into the economy. In 2003, approximately 15.5
million passengers enplaned and deplaned.

 - MacDill Air Force Base and Defense Spending ? The total economic
impact of MacDill AFB on the Greater Tampa Bay Area (within a 50 mile
region) in Fiscal Year 2002 (October 1, 2001 ? September 2002) was
greater than $5.5 billion. Impact is comprised of $2.7 billion in
annual payroll (military, civilian and retirees), $1.2 billion in
total annual expenditures (construction, services materials, equipment
and supplies) and $1.6 billion in estimated annual value of indirect
jobs created. The total number of jobs supported includes nearly
12,000 military, over 7,200 civilian employees, over 64,000 retired
military and 69,000 retired military dependents, 12,400 active duty
military dependents and more than 50,000 indirect jobs. Defense
spending in Hillsborough County for Fiscal Year 2002 is estimated as
$1.3 billion comprised of $498 million in procurement, $522 million in
transfers (entitlement payments received by military and civilian
retirees and veterans) and $319.4 million in salaries (direct salaries
for military and civilian employees). Direct and indirect economic
impact of the defense spending in Hillsborough County is over $3
billion and 48,120 jobs.?
