Hi skiswimmer,

Basicly it scans the book, then do an OCR (Optical Character
Recognition), correct any OCR error, and put it on digital format.

skiswimmer-ga:

An excellent example of this is Google's Catalog Search beta, found at:

http://catalog.google.com

This beta search tool lets you search the actual pages of actual
mail-order catalogs. Give it a try, you'll find it intriguing.
