I'm working on a website about Irish rebellion, and I'd like to
include a page of songs. I already have a few (The Foggy Dew, Glory O
to the Bold Fenian Men, Grace, and Skibbereen), but I'd like 10-15
others. Ideally, they would be about the Easter Rising (1916) or the
period from 1919-1922, however, songs about earlier rebellions would
also be acceptable. They should be songs that were written during or
shortly after the revolutions, as opposed to recent ones.
Thanks in advance!

As you undoubtedly know, there is an enormous amount of traditional
Irish music, a substantial portion of which was created in the context
of rebellion. Thus it is not surprising that there are many
recordings of the music of Irish rebellion and at least two printed
collections of these songs and ballads.

Under the circumstances, I think I can best meet your needs by
focusing on songs connected with the 1916 Easter Rising, as you
specifically request, and supplement that with a search strategy
suggestion that should efficiently lead you to more information that
might interest you.

Below is a list of songs that are directly connected to the 1916
rebellion, along with links to pages that will provide you with
complete lyrics and more information about them, along with (in come
cases) an online rendition of the song. (I have included on the list
the songs you mentioned in the question, in case the additional linked
information about them is of interest to you.)

The first batch is from a BBC Web page called "Songs of Rebellion,"
which includes "just some of those that were sung during the time
leading up to, and including, the Rebellion of 1916, the War of
Independence and the Civil War." Links to complete lyrics and
recorded performances are includes in most cases:

"The Grand Old Dame Brittania"
"The Recruiting Sergeant"
"Sergeant William Bailey"
"The Row In The Town"
"James Connolly"
"The Foggy Dew"
"Kevin Barry"
"The Valley Of Knockanure"
"Take It Down From The Mast"

BBC: History: Songs of Rebellion

The second list is from an outline of a CBS Radio documentary entitled
"The Irish Uprising - 1916-1922," which was broadcast in 1966. Lyrics
to the songs and ballads included in the list are linked on the Web
page that is the source of the information (a few of the songs listed
here are also listed at the above site):

"The Soldiers Song"
"The Bold Fenian Men"
"Lonely Banns Strand"
"The Tricolor Ribbon"
"The Rising Of The Moon"
"Wrap The Green Flag Round Us, Boys"
"Tipperary So Far Away"
"Down By The Glenside"
"The West's Awake"
"The Foggy Dew"
"The Dying Rebel"
"The Grand Old Dame Britannia"
"Johnson's Motor Car"
"The Valley of Knockanure"
"Off To Dublin In The Green"
"Boys From The County Cork"
"Kevin Barry"
"Shall My Soul Pass Through Old Ireland"
"A Nation Once Again"

Search Strategy:

These are the Google searches that led me to the sites I have linked for you above:

If you interested in pursuing further the rich musical history of
Irish rebellion, I suggest reviewing the results of those searches for
yourself.

I also conducted other searches to get information on relevant books
and recordings and to confirm that I hadn't overlooked important
nonduplicative information.

I hope and expect that this information will be useful to you. If
anything is unclear, please ask for clarification before rating the

Hi Markj,

Maybe your research hasn't yet come up with these songs, I thought of
off the top of my head -
The green fields of France - WW1 -

http://www.3pintsgone.com/lyrics/StValery/GreenFieldsofFrance.htm

and

The boys of Kilmichael - Irish war of independance -

http://mysongbook.de/msb/songs/b/boysofki.html

My main tip is that, if you are in Dublin sometime, you should visit
the irish traditional music archive on Merrion Square. They have a
wealth of information on songs and irish music down the ages and the
staff are very helpful. You are allowed listen to recordings and
photocopy a limited percentage of publications (as stipulated by
copyright), and research to your hearts content. They have recordings
from the 1920's. (My interest is music and not songs.)

Good luck!!
