Please help me by providing the answer to this very difficult question.

The only person who springs readily to mind is Olivia Newton John.

I have rejected Kylie Minogue, Paul Hogan, Ned Kelly, Mel Gibson, Dame
Peach Melba and Don Bradman for various reasons.

Can anyone knock Olivia off her perch?

It is actually Frank Morgan. - - - you said so.

The only reason I grabbed your statement as a formal answer is that it
is my 250th answer - which means I now have 1 "hoot" as a GA Answers
researcher.

I shall be grateful forever. (groveling and foot kissing, extra)

Cheers

Hi, Digs

You are absolutely right as always!

I am delighted that you have chosen one of my questions to reach the 250 landmark.

Now, for a 1 cent tip ....

Why?

Thank you

And the 1 cent tip gets you half a grovel.

Why? - because it was there.

Now I will ask the editor's to remove the answer. It was actually cheating.

And here's the tip, as well!

Hy Bryan,

I'd love to knock Olivia off .. her perch.

On opening your question, my immediate thought was Sir Don Bradman.
I'd be interested to hear your reason for rejection. The Bodyline
Series comes to mind.

If so, then that leaves only Johnfrommelbourne or my goodself as
contenders of course. :)

What about Don Bradman?

Hy Bryan,

On a more serious note.

Fred Hollows (deceased).. Eye doctor (for want of the correct term).
Although born in NZ, he was nominated as Aussie of the Year at some
time. He set up programs for prevention of blindness. He spent a lot
of time healing our Indigenous people, and also those in need abroad.
He also taught other doctors his procedures. His wife Gabbi is still
heavily involved in the running of his foundation, I believe.

I don't know much more about him, but I'm sure that every Aussie will
know his name.

Many don't even know that Flea (from the red hot chilli peppers) is
from Oz, but I nominate him!

How can OLN be the greatest Australian, when she was born in England
of a German mother and Welsh father? It's got to be Sir Les Patterson.
(I've rejected Edna Everage for the same reasons you rejected Sir Don
Bradman et al.)

Skippy does it for me.

?What?s that Skippy? You need a life saving antibiotic! Well luckily
our fellow Oz, Howard Florey, helped to develop the miracle
penicillin.?

Sorry, Folks, But I am afraid that you are all wrong!

It is actually Frank Morgan.

Like a drum or a dusty carpet, he will take a lot of beating.

Olivia has done some great things.

However, singing "Let's Get Physical" while wearing a leotard,
headband, and leggings--in addition to appearing in the film
Xanadu--may prevent her from having a clear shot at the Greatest
Aussie title.

Wasn't that bloke Russell Crowe from A Beautiful Mind, Gladiator, L.A.
Confidential, Master and Commander, and The Insider an Australian
(though born in New Zealand)? Oh wait, never mind... he was in the
movie Viruosity, which may disqualify him.

Well, it must be Aussie Ausborn then.

Bryan,
On a serious note Fred Hollows must go close given his
committment and sacrifices for the people of Africa. Digs' choice is
also good but I think Fred just pips him on greater analysis. Many
here would readily support Gough Whitlam. Don Bradman was a
right-wing unsociable and somewhat mean/selfish and self-centered
character so could not support him at all.

Hy Bryan and Hi Johnfrommelbourne,

Just had to say G'day again.

I'm glad to see that Fred Hollows as nominated is seconded by you
John. I guess it doesn't matter whether someone is the greatest
"Aussie", but rather one of the many greats from anywhere, as
percieved by the rest of the world.

I reckon Fred (R.I.P.) was up there near Mother Theresa, with his
giving of self. I don't believe that I would have the guts to give my
life in the way he did. I guess that we can all be a part of that in
our own way, when we all give to the point of some sacrifice to
ourselves which betters another's life.

On a lighter note, I'd like to hear more about The Don.

Hi, Phil & John

The late Fred Hollows is OK by me, even though I had never heard of
him previously. Many thanks for the intro. I do hope that he is
hitting it off with Mother Theresa, whoever she is or was. (Sorry, I
don't watch any soaps.)

As for The Don ... Yes ... It's a mighty river in Russia (I think) ...
What or who else? Donald Duck, Donald O'Connor (I did like him),
President Donald Reagan, Big Mac Donald, Don Juan and of course that
great Oz cricketer Don Lillee ...

Have I missed anyone?

All the Best

Bryan
