Howdy groendog-ga,

I have found the range of what appears to be a "middle class" income in
Pakistan. It coordinates with the average government worker there. This
range of salary is used in various documents, including one by the Pakistan
government, and is a range above the majority of people's incomes, and below
what appears to be the upper range of income. Would this do? Thanks!

Howdy groendog-ga,

You will need Acrobat Reader to read the original of some of the following
documents that are in PDF format. If you do not have it, you can download
it free from the Adobe web site.
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

This 2001 Boston Phoenix article provides the average pay of government worker
in Pakistan. In my experience, this roughly parallels office workers income,
at least here in the U.S.
http://www.bostonphoenix.com/boston/news_features/other_stories/documents/02007892.htm

"Rent for the rooms runs from 1100 to 1500 rupees per month (about $18 to $25).
It doesn?t sound like a lot until you consider that the salary for the average
government worker in Pakistan is 3000 to 5000 rupees a month."

The current rate is around 57 Pakistan rupees to an American dollar, so the
salary range above is around $53 to $88 a month, or $636 to $1056 a year.

Although this following paper refers to a 1990-1991 survey, it reiterates the
general range of "middle class" Pakistan pay as 2501 to 5000 Pakistan rupees a
month.
http://webdoc.sub.gwdg.de/diss/1997/waheed/chap3.pdf

"The results of the survey reveal that 54.7 percent of households in Pakistan
earn up to Rs. 2500 monthly, 31.9% earn between Rs. 2501 to RS. 5000 monthly,
and 13.4 percent earn more than Rs. 5000."

All sorts of information can be found on the Government of Pakistan Federal
Bureau of Statistics web site.
http://www.statpak.gov.pk/depts/fbs/publications/lfs2001_2002/lfs2001_2002.html

"Labour Force Survey 2001-2002"

The survey that addresses your question is the "PERCENTAGE DISTRIBUTION OF
EMPLOYEES 10 YEARS OF AGE AND BY PROVINCE, SEX AND MONTHLY INCOME, 2001-2002"
http://www.statpak.gov.pk/depts/fbs/publications/lfs2001_2002/t21.pdf

"...
EMPLOYEES BY INCOME GROUPS

UP TO RS. 1500
RS. 1501 TO 2500
RS. 2501 TO 4000
RS. 4001 AND ABOVE
..."

As you can see, the category just below the highest pay range seems to
correspond with what we would consider "middle class," which would include
"white collar" workers.

2500 Pakistan rupees would be around $44 a month, or $528 a year, at the
lower point of the range, to the upper point, as stated before, of $88 a
month or $1056 a year.

If you need any clarification, feel free to ask.
