I am refering to work for a small bussiness. The area would be website design.

You make more if you handle the database management after you build the site.

Are you talking about corporate use and maintainment of a network for
a corporation, or are you talking more about freelance webdesign using
the basics (Flash, mySQL, PHP, etc)?

You could either get an overall commission, say for each page
developed or every word on a page, you could be paid like a regular
employee.

If it's a small business in New York which is one of the areas flooded
with designers, and you get paid as a regular employee, I wouldn't
expect to make more than $25/hr your first year out.
