My company currently imports 49cc motor scooters. We have spoken with
companies in China that manufacturer scooters that are 125ccs and meet
the requirements to get EPA and DOT approval. The companies, however,
do not have EPA and DOT approval for their products. They sell to
companies in the US that got the approval themselves.
What is the process on getting EPA and DOT approval for a motor
scooter? What forms do we fill out? What is the average time frame
on receiving the approval? What is the cost? |

Hi!
I was able to find documentation regarding the necessary steps you
need to make as to the fullfillment of requirements for approval by
the EPA, DOT and also by US Customs since you are importing such
products. However; the documents DOES NOT specify a TIME FRAME for an
approval.
Would links ot these documents be ok as an answer even if it does not
have information for time frame of approval?

How specific is the information you found? I am looking for a very
clear step by step guide, with form numbers that need to be submitted,
etc. Does your information detail the costs associated with getting
the approvals?

The documents I found were official ones and are pretty detailed steps
you need to take in importing the vehicles. However; only the DOT and
US Customs provide a rundown of the fees in importing a vehicle.
Will this be ok as an answer?

I want to be sure that the information you found is for importing
scooters, not necessarily any motor vehicles. Also, I want to be sure
the information explains how to get EPA and DOT approval for scooters
that will be for resale, not for a personal vehicle.

Most of the official documents does not mention a really specific
regulations for scooters but lumps such type of vehicle as "motor
vehicles" I wasn't able to find anything yet that says something
specific or directly about "scooters".
I will open this to other researchers so that they may have a chance
to take a crack at it.
