I am looking for a children's book about a boy who goes on a trip with
his family.  He carries all kinds of useful tools in his backpack (or
maybe suitcase?).  He uses different things to solve problems along
the way.  I specifically remember he had string to help close up a
suitcase that broke open at the airport.

Probably in the early 80s... Definitely prior to 1988.
