Hi there - I think you'll find some good tips on how to evaluate and critically appraise nursing research in the literature on evidence based nursing (EBN). EBN looks at the available evidence (usually in peer-reviewed research articles) about treating disease/patients and evaluates that research in the context of the particular situation the nurse finds her/himself in. Here are some tutorials on EBN: UNC Health Sciences Libraray: Evidence Based Nursing http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Services/Tutorials/EBN/splash.htm In particular, I think the third step, "Appraise" (http://www.hsl.unc.edu/Services/Tutorials/EBN/practice3.htm) is most applicable to your current situation. There are a number of links to articles and websites that discuss methods of research evaluation. University of Minnesota: Evidence Based Nursing http://evidence.ahc.umn.edu/ebn.htm This one has a table of questions to ask that influence the validity and strength of research in a paper. McGill University Health Centre http://www.muhc-ebn.mcgill.ca/EBN_tools.htm The section on Critical Appraisal (http://www.muhc-ebn.mcgill.ca/EBN_tools.htm#appraisal) lists links to further sources of information on evaluating/analyzing research. I hope these sources help you! The process of critically appraising someone else's work can be challenging but also very interesting. I found these tutorials by doing a search of Google for "evidence based nursing", which term I knew from my professional life. Please let me know if I can help you further with this or any other question. Librariankt |
