Which aspect of Google and Yahoo business are you seeking comparison?

Search
Mail
Portal/Homepage
Directory

The "market leader" in search at the time of Google's debut was Alta
Vista, rather than Yahoo. Yahoo was a directory, rather than a search
engine or portal at that stage. It would help to know what type and
level of detail you're seeking.

Aside from being a better search engine, how did Google get its name
out there and what did they do to get people to switch? how did they
knock Yahoo down?

I could be wrong, but I think I recall Yahoo! actually using Google's
search engine a while back. Since another comment indicated Yahoo! was
originally a directory, it might have made sense for Yahoo! to enhance
its search with a search engine. The reason I feel this way is that I
think I used to use Yahoo! for searches for a long time, then I
noticed "Powered by Google." Well, why not just search on Google? I
didn't need all the other stuff Yahoo! wanted to tell me about, so I
switched.

At least, that's how *I* remember it. :)
