I lived in Texas for many years. Now I live in Colorado but maintain a residence in Texas. I have established a trust. My financial advisor recommended that I keep Texas residency due to tax and probate reasons. I dont know why and I dont get clear answers. If I went ahead and took Colorado residency it would make my life easier. Car tags, hunting licensing fees, etc. Why would I want to keep Texas residency. I feel kind of dishonest doing it when I only spend 3 or 4 months out of the year there. My kids are grown and live in Texas. My wife and I live here, in Colorado. We're in our 70s. Can anyone help me answer this? |

Having lived in both Colorado and Texas, I would guess that one reason is that Colorado has a State Income Tax, whereas Texas doesn't. Since probate deals with what happens with your estate after you die, I'm guessing (and ONLY guessing) that Colorado takes a much larger chunk out. Hope this is helpful! |
