I have a fujitsu point 1600 tablet pc. and i need to install windows
98se on it, the device has no floppy drive, or cd drive, and will only
boot off the hard drive.
So far I have taken the hard drive out the tablet pc, and put it in my
desktop pc, formatted using:
format d: /s
copied the entire windows cd on to it in to a folder called
c:\win98cd, and then put the hard drive back in the tablet.
when i start it up, i can browse the folder fine, i use.
Cd win98cd
setup
and the setup begins, it copies files asks for some input etc, and it
all works fine, but after first reboot, during the install it all goes
wrong.
the tablet goes throught POST and after that it just stops dead, with
a flashing _ on the screen, the keyboard which has no effect, and it
does nothing from there on.
If however i take the hard drive out of the tablet pc again, and back
in to my desktop, it continues the rest of setup perfectly.
afterwards i put the hard drive back in tablet pc, and i get the blank
dash on the screen again after POST.
so far i`ve tried insatlling win 95, win 98 and win 98se, and yuk win
me, when i tried windows 2000 i got a ntldr error. but i need win 98se
on it anyway.
I also tried installing everything, including the drivers off the
fujitsu website, and then putting it back in the tablet pc, and i get
exactly the same blank screen with a dash.
Thanx in advance |

After looking at the specs of your device I'm thinking that you may be
having a problem with data transfer. Before you install, go to BIOS
and disable UDMA and 'plug and play' support (if any). Please let me
know if this solves your problem.

Try setting the BIOS to the default (factory) settings and set the following to:
LBA mode control - Enabled
Ultra DMA Mode - Disabled
Make sure to disable plug and play if it appears in the BIOS.
If this fails, set the BIOS to safe or fail safe mode if ever there is
that option and try again.
Make sure that you have fully formatted the disk to where you started
before you try installing the OS. By this I mean:
"...formatted using: format d: /s, copied the entire windows cd on to
it in to a folder called c:\win98cd, and then put the hard drive back
in the tablet.
When i start it up, i can browse the folder fine, i use.
Cd win98cd
setup"

After the reset of BIOS, and subesquent changes, the HD section now
reads as follows
multisector transfers : 16 sectors
LBA Mode control : Enabled
Transfer mode : Fast PIO 4
Ultra DMA Mode : Disabled
As i said with these settings, and running install , it fails in
exactly the same way.
any more suggestions?.....anyone?

"If however i take the hard drive out of the tablet pc again, and back
in to my desktop, it continues the rest of setup perfectly."
Here's a possible workaround:
Since you are able to attach your tablet pc's HD to your desktop, why
not install Win 98SE from there? Just make sure that only the tablet's
HD is attached to your desktop and do the same installation process.
After the OS is succesfully installed via the dektop unit, put the HD
back in your tablet PC, enable Plug and play OS in the BIOS, then run
Windows. Once you're sure that the OS works fine, only then should you
add any driver/program or change whatever setting you want to change
in Windows or BIOS.

Same result on what unit - desktop or tablet? If you did the
installation via your desktop and it hanged at first boot on that
unit, there is a problem in your tablet PC's HD. It may be due to some
logical or physical errors in the drive. Scan the drive thoroughly
using a disk scanning utility such as Scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor
before you install the OS.

Since Windows has already been succefully installed via your desktop
unit you don't need to install it anymore in your tablet pc. Go to
BIOS again and on the first page or standard CMOS setup, look for the
option "Halt on: All errors" or "Stop on: All errors". Change this
setting to "No errors", save it, reboot and see if it works.

There is nothing that looks even close to "Halt on: All errors" or
"Stop on: All errors". in my BIOS.

Have you tried booting into safe mode after installation?
Hold CTRL just after the POST or as it's finishing and choose 'safe mode'.
Thanks.
