Question ID: 408326
I have a fujitsu point 1600 tablet pc. and i need to install windows
98se on it, the device has no floppy drive, or cd drive, and will only
boot off the hard drive.

So far I have taken the hard drive out the tablet pc, and put it in my
desktop pc, formatted using:
 format d: /s
copied the entire windows cd on to it in to a folder called
c:\win98cd, and then put the hard drive back in the tablet.

when i start it up, i can browse the folder fine, i use.

Cd win98cd
setup

and the setup begins, it copies files asks for some input etc, and it
all works fine, but after first reboot, during the install it all goes
wrong.

the tablet goes throught POST and after that it just stops dead, with
a flashing _ on the screen, the keyboard which has no effect, and it
does nothing from there on.

If however i take the hard drive out of the tablet pc again, and back
in to my desktop, it continues the rest of setup perfectly.

afterwards i put the hard drive back in tablet pc, and i get the blank
dash on the screen again after POST.

so far i`ve tried insatlling win 95, win 98 and win 98se, and yuk win
me, when i tried windows 2000 i got a ntldr error. but i need win 98se
on it anyway.

I also tried installing everything, including the drivers off the
fujitsu website, and then putting it back in the tablet pc, and i get
exactly the same blank screen with a dash.

Thanx in advance

After looking at the specs of your device I'm thinking that you may be
having a problem with data transfer. Before you install, go to BIOS
and disable UDMA and 'plug and play' support (if any). Please let me
know if this solves your problem.

then some more options underneath

Multisector transfers:
16 sectors
max 32
max 64
max 128
disabled
2 sectors
4 sectors
8 sectors
16 sectors

Lba mode control:
disabled
Enabled

Transfer mode:
Standard
Fast PIO 1
Fast PIO 2
Fast PIO 3
Fast PIO 4
FastPIO3/DMA
FastPIO4/DMA

Ultra DMA Mode:

for each of these options the first one is the selected one.

Try setting the BIOS to the default (factory) settings and set the following to:

LBA mode control - Enabled
Ultra DMA Mode - Disabled

Make sure to disable plug and play if it appears in the BIOS.

If this fails, set the BIOS to safe or fail safe mode if ever there is
that option and try again.

Make sure that you have fully formatted the disk to where you started
before you try installing the OS. By this I mean:

"...formatted using: format d: /s, copied the entire windows cd on to
it in to a folder called c:\win98cd, and then put the hard drive back
in the tablet.

When i start it up, i can browse the folder fine, i use.

Cd win98cd
setup"

Ok i have clicked "load defaults" in the BIOS

changed the HD settings to

"LBA mode control - Enabled
Ultra DMA Mode - Disabled"

in the advanced menu i have clicked NO for

Plug + play OS

also below is secured setup, set to no also, the info next to it says
"'Yes' prevents a plug and play os from changeing system settings"

I`ll let you know in an hour.

I have followed the recomendations, and have exactly the same problem,
there is also no safe mood in the BIOS that i could find

Clarification of Question by spiderbike-ga on 30 Sep 2004 12:46 PDT
After the reset of BIOS, and subesquent changes, the HD section now
reads as follows

multisector transfers : 16 sectors
LBA Mode control : Enabled
Transfer mode : Fast PIO 4
Ultra DMA Mode : Disabled

As i said with these settings, and running install , it fails in
exactly the same way.

any more suggestions?.....anyone?

"If however i take the hard drive out of the tablet pc again, and back
in to my desktop, it continues the rest of setup perfectly."

Here's a possible workaround:

Since you are able to attach your tablet pc's HD to your desktop, why
not install Win 98SE from there? Just make sure that only the tablet's
HD is attached to your desktop and do the same installation process.
After the OS is succesfully installed via the dektop unit, put the HD
back in your tablet PC, enable Plug and play OS in the BIOS, then run
Windows. Once you're sure that the OS works fine, only then should you
add any driver/program or change whatever setting you want to change
in Windows or BIOS.

When i do this i get exactly the same result.

:(

Same result on what unit - desktop or tablet? If you did the
installation via your desktop and it hanged at first boot on that
unit, there is a problem in your tablet PC's HD. It may be due to some
logical or physical errors in the drive. Scan the drive thoroughly
using a disk scanning utility such as Scandisk or Norton Disk Doctor
before you install the OS.

Oh no sorry, when i put HD in my desktop, it finished install perfectly.

i put it back in the tablet, and it dies exactly the same way after the POST
.

Since Windows has already been succefully installed via your desktop
unit you don't need to install it anymore in your tablet pc. Go to
BIOS again and on the first page or standard CMOS setup, look for the
option "Halt on: All errors" or "Stop on: All errors". Change this
setting to "No errors", save it, reboot and see if it works.

Clarification of Question by spiderbike-ga on 01 Oct 2004 06:43 PDT
There is nothing that looks even close to "Halt on: All errors" or
"Stop on: All errors". in my BIOS.

no, there is no network adaptor, only built in RF, which does not
support pxe boot etc.

Have you tried booting into safe mode after installation?

Hold CTRL just after the POST or as it's finishing and choose 'safe mode'.

Thanks.

Do you have a network adapter on the laptop? If so you could attempt a
network install.

Well, I have a Fjitsu Point 1600. I had some problem with data
transfer. I bought a PCMCA card adapter for Flash Card $10.00 on eBay.
I bought a 1GB Flash Memory $80.00-$100.00 on eBay. It worth to spend
that much on it. I just copied everything on it and I installaed
everything from there.

Well, I am still the one who also has a Point1600. So, I still say
that the Flash card is really good. But anyway. In the first message
you posted you wrote that "...copied the entire windows cd on to it in
to a folder called
c:\win98cd, and then put the hard drive back in the tablet..."
Well, this could be a problem. Since you called the directory
c:\win98cd the problem could be if you start the setup, the windows
installer automatically will install the OS to drive C:/, but because
you already had everything on drive C:/ it could be two things. Either
the installer installed the OS to a different drive. Might be drive
D:/ or E:/ or F:/ .....
OR it did installed to drive c:/ To look at the first choice when the
installer installed to a different drive. At this time when you try to
turn on your TabletPC the PC try to boot from drive C:/ but there is
no information to boot. Or the second if you installed to drive C:/
then because the Installer CD is copied there too, then it can be an
interference. That could be the only logical way if your HDD is
working right and there is no error on it. For solution you can try
the following. Install your Win95 back and get your PC working. After
that, try to put the HDD in your Desktop and Install the Win98 from
the original CD to the HDD. After the installation there should need
to be only the WIN 98 on the HDD and the TabletPC should boot
correctly. Then you only need to install the pen tools on it and
done.Or use the flash card. Or if you don't want to buy the flash,
then you can use the smart media which is cheaper. Buy a smart media
card reader or PCMCA adapter. Then buy a Smart Media Card. Then you
can download a file manager software for free from, www.cursorarts.com
The program name FileWrangler. You can cut the big 500MB files for
small files and then copy to your Smart Media Card and then to the
HDD. An d then the program will provide you a .exe file which will put
the file together again. If you want to save money, you can buy the
stuff in wal-mart and after you done just return it. Tell them it
didn't work for you. But you will only have 15 days to take it back.
Anyway if you do it this way you need to create a Drive D:/ on your
TabletPC and copy the entire Win98 CD content in the D:/ drive. Then
install it from there.
When I first did this, I had set the drive C:/ for 2GB and drive D:/ 2GB

Maybe i didn`t make it clear

"so far i`ve tried insatlling win 95, win 98 and win 98se, and yuk win
me, when i tried windows 2000 i got a ntldr error. but i need win 98se
on it anyway."

you say "Install your Win95 back and get your PC working."
Hey mate, if it was that easy i`d have stuck with that and run 95,
damn all i can get to work is dos 6.22

if there is a special way to install win 95 i`m willing to try anything.

"c:\win98cd, and then put the hard drive back in the tablet..."
D:/ or E:/ or F:/ ....."

i may be missing something here, but it works perfect when i put the
hd in my desktop, after partial install in tablet.

please tell i`m beng stupid and missing something here

I might be able to help here. I Successfully installed Windows XP on
my Fujitsu Point 1600.

How I did it:

I used a compact flash card connected to my desktop computer and
placed the drivers for my external CD rom drive on it.

I then placed the Compact Flash into the Point 1600 and installed the
drivers. I then plugged in my external USB CD-rom drive into the
1600.

From windows, I inserted the XP CD and chose Upgrade from the
selection. It went VERY smoothly and worked perfectly.

The problem I ran into was I could not find drivers for the touch
screen anywhere to work with the Fujitsu Point 1600 and Windows XP.

From the control panel, I went to Add & Remove, and selected the XP
upgrade. Within about 5 minutes, the Point 1600 rebooted back to
Windows 98.

This should work also for 98SE as you can also install that from
Windows on a 98 machine.

I hope this helps!

Hello there,

I have *exactly* the same problem with a Fujitsu point 1600 machine.
We went even further by using Norton Ghost to duplicate the hard disk
of a working Point 1600 and then restoring it on the blank hard disk.
The message we get when booting is "Non system disk, Press any key to
continue"! We are going to work some more on it on monday so I'll let
you know if we get through.

Thanks Raph, keep me up to date on it, if you get a working disk
image, maybe you could ftp it to me?
