Hi littlejackyboy,

Briefly, your ABPN Board Certification is recognized in Canada, that
is the good news. That means that you are already qualified to
practice psychiatry in Canada, however, you'll need to get permission
to practice (licensure) in the province of your choice. Each province
has its own requirements for the issuance of a license to practice
medicine in Canada. In addition to meeting license requirements, you
will also need a visa to work in Canada. If your work falls under the
category of teaching or research, then you are eligible under the
NAFTA agreement for a visa. Otherwise, you'll have to apply for a
Canadian work visa. You'll find a good explanation at the following
website, along with required links.

Licensing: MDs ? Canada:
http://www.medhunters.com/articles/licensingMDsCanada.html

Medical Doctors from the US or Mexico:
"Like Canadian MDs, US and Mexican MDs will need to obtain a
provincial licence before being allowed to practice in Canada. In
order to obtain a provincial license, a two-part exam administered by
the Medical Council of Canada (MCC), called the MCC Qualifying Exam
Parts I and II (MCCQE I and MCCQE II) must be written and passed.
These exams are only available in Canada, and are only available in
the Spring and Fall. For more information, you should contact the MCC
directly."

MCC:

For information about specialty certification, see The Royal College
of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Visa information:
"Medical Doctors are covered under NAFTA for the purposes of teaching
and/or research only. If you are a citizen of the USA or Mexico, you
are eligible for a visa. Permanent Residents of the USA or Mexico are
not eligible under NAFTA.
You can obtain an Employment Authorization (NAFTA Professional Status)
from any Canadian port of entry, US-Canadian border crossing, or
Canadian Consulate (or in Canada, if you are already in the country as
a visitor). No sponsorship is required. Job Offer Validation is not
required. However, you will still need to provide proof of an offer of
employment from your employer in Canada. You must also meet the
minimum education, experience, and licensing Requirements set for your
profession.

Your documentation* you present must indicate:
* the professional level activity you will carry out
* your job title
* summary of your job duties
* starting date and expected length of temporary stay
* arrangement for remuneration.

*This documentation can include: a signed contract between you and an
employer; a letter from your prospective employer confirming that
employment has been offered and accepted; a letter from your current
employer stating that you are entering another NAFTA member country to
render services pursuant to a signed contract between your employer
and an enterprise in that country.
The duration of the Employment Authorization is set for an initial
period of one year. An unlimited number of one-year extensions may be
subsequently obtained so long as you can show that the employment
remains temporary, and that you continue to be qualified to work in
your profession.
If you do not fall under the category of teaching and/or research, you
are likely to require a work visa, and usually sponsorship is
required. Please contact the nearest Canadian Embassy or Consulate for
more information.

>>>>>>Provincial and Territorial Licensing Authorities

Medical Licensing Authorities of Canada
http://www.mcc.ca/english/examinations/medical_licensing.html

Applying for a license to practice medicine
"Only the provincial and territorial medical licensing authorities
grant licences to practice medicine. Most licensing authorities
require physicians to become a Licentiate of the Medical Council of
Canada, and to hold certification in family medicine or a specialty,
before they are considered as candidates for licensing."

Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada
To obtain the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada you must
first successfully complete:
* the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination;
* the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part I;
* at least 12 months of postgraduate medical training; and
* the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination Part II.

Licensing Requirements for Physicians:

ABPN, Canadians Agree on Reciprocity for Certification (November 17, 2000):
"Psychiatrists and neurologists who are certified in Canada will soon
be able to take the examination needed to gain U.S. certification.
Their U.S. counterparts who have been certified by the American Board
of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) will in turn gain the opportunity
to become certified in Canada."

Since I am U.S. trained, I was told by the British Columbia medical
board that I needed to take the equivalent of the U.S. National Boards
of Medical Examiners (Parts I, II, and III), known as the LMCC, to be
eligible for licensure in British Columbia...."

I hope this helps and you now have a better idea of what is needed to
practice psychiatry in Canada. If you have any questions, please post
a clarification request before closing/rating my answer and I'll be
happy to reply.

Thank you,
hummer
