Toxins from poison-hemlock (Conium maculatum) or from a water-hemlock (Cicuta sp.) perhaps? http://www.cbif.gc.ca/pls/pp/ppack.info?p_psn=41&p_type=all&p_sci=sci&p_x=px http://www.cbif.gc.ca/pls/pp/ppack.info?p_psn=43&p_type=all&p_sci=sci&p_x=px :-) As2O3 |

In a similar vein, there is a plant indigenous to southwest Western Australia called Box Poison. It has a succulent leaf very attractive to sheep. They can tolerate a shoot of the bush coming out of the ground, but at 12 inches high is so toxic, that one small bush can kill 2oo sheep. It was probably called the Box Bush originally, but experience by farmers caused its renamimg. An extract of its foliage is used to make the poison "1080" used to lace meat baits to combat introduced cats and foxes. And an amazing fact. The plant is harmless to indigenous herbivorous wildlife such as kangaroos and other species of wallabies. |
