Lord Lothian (Philip Kerr) had long, separate meetings with Hitler,
Goering & Schacht on the above dates.

His entry in the DNB says that he 'reluctantly' left the British
All-Party Government in 1932 and it then jumps to his being appointed
Ambassador to the United States in 1939.

But who was he working for in May 1937?

I've got the text of the his meetings and (shrewdly) I suspect that he
didn't just drop by uninvited.

Hi, Adolf, I was just passing by your place ...

Bryan,
I unable to give full answer to this at the moment (pressing personal
commitments until Sunday), but are you aware that he was a member of
the "Cliveden Set" and famous for appeasement in the 1930s? He sat in
the House of Lords as a Liberal. I suspect that this may have been a
private visit.

Hi, Answerfinder

Yes, I was aware of his association with the Cliveden Set & his work
with Milner, Curtis et al.

He is also credited with having drafted some part of the Versailles Treaty, etc.

But ... Why would three top Nazi honchos see him in May 1937?

I seriously doubt that it was a private visit although it may have
been a private visit, sort of. (Nudge, nudge.)

And if it had been a private visit, why would his reports get sent to
officialdom? Don't ask me where he sent them ... That's what I would
like to know.

Have a great time over-indulging until Sunday. Wow, that's quite a bender!

Bryan, the article "Lord Lothian and the Atlantic World" by Priscilla
Roberts (The Historian, Volume 66 - Number 1 - March 2004, page 97 -

Perfect, Freddy, Very many thanks!

Actually, I arrived at Lothian via T P Conwell-Evans who was one of
Vansittart's sources on Nazi intentions. He was friendly with
Ribbentrop.
