There's some movie, maybe "Philadelphia Story," in which one of the
character's at some point says, "CJ Nikowski, CJ Nikowski." I know
he's a Yankee pitcher; but I also know that it's a literary reference
from somewhere and it's driving me crazy...help!

...rather, I should say a FILMIC reference...

Off the top of my head there was someone called *Nikowski* or a
similar name who wrote about *Modernism*...maybe that is who you are
thinking of? I am just trying prod your memory and fill in a bit of
time whilst my own question is being answered.:)

The former baseball player -- too young to be mentioned in "The
Philadelphia Story" -- is C.J. Nitkowski.
