Question ID: 409554
How can I convert a database into a stand-alone .EXE file (similar in
function and use as the popular cookbook ebooks / recipe manager
programs) where the end-user is able to add/edit information to the
original eBook/program, but it is all contained within the original
"ebook"? This potential eBook will be a graphics intense, largely text
database. Most of the text entries are more than single sentences,
possibly up to several pages of text per field/record. I have limited
(20yrs ago) experience using databases, and absolutely NO experience
with current programming languages or protocols.

mamadragon...

Take a look at this program by VisualVision, called eBooksWriter.
There's a free version called the LITE version that you can test
out and evaluate, and it may be all you need. Or, if it works and
you want to support the author and access the PRO features, you
can purchase the software.

sublime1-
Thanks for your quick response. However, what I could determine from
a "once-over" of the sales page, that program will allow search of
textual ebooks, which is a good thing. However, it does not meet my
needs, as my information will be database driven/founded. Have you
taken a look at the better "Recipe Manager" eBooks available lately?

To further explain my goal-
This instructional ebook will be laid out like a recipe book: list of
components(type and measures); list of equipment necessary; list of
instructions for assembly/completion, including any necessary
illustrations for a particular step/instruction to make sure the
procedure is fully understood and easy to complete before beginning
the next step.

I would like to be able to offer end-user ability to add personal
notes/comments to each project, as well as the ability for the
end-user to add tutorials/projects of their own into the "Reference
Manual". This is now a standard ability of the better cookbook
programs available on the Internet.

I have the concept clearly defined, both in my mind and on paper, but
finding the database software capable of handling large (several
thousand words per field in a few instances) text entries as well as
graphics, and then the software to export the database TO to create a
.exe file eBook has become "The Great Quest".

(If I knew how to locate a reputable designer/programmer that I could
interest in a Joint Venture to exploit an apparently under-valued
Niche in the eBook Market, I'd even be willing to give THAT a close
look. :-) )

Dreamboat-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but IF I understand correctly, Help files do
NOT have the capability for end-user modification. The big draw (to
me) of the cookbook format is that the end-user CAN edit the
information contained therein, and add any aditional information
"recipes" they choose to. This ability is the major function I'm
looking to be able to duplicate.

If all I wanted was a searchable text ebook, it would hardly be
necessary to build a database at all.

I'm looking at FileMaker and Alpha Five, but the costs there are more
than I can afford when you purchase the ability to create the stand
alone .exe files - over $700.00 for Alpha Five, and even more for
FileMaker.

Anybody know anything about the Linux programming, and whether or not
Those softwares are capable of wht I'm needing??

Thanks,
MamaDragon

You might very well be able to find a person like that at
http://www.vbaexpress.com/forum. Become a member (we won't spam you, I
promise) and post in the forum about it. Once you join, you can send
me any questions via private message. Or ask here if you like. But
there's lots of *techie/programmer types* over there, and I know a few
who are currently not gainfully employed and might consider something
like this to keep them busy.

Oh, and just to provide some information, you might want to look into
something like RoboHelp (expensive) or a similar free program from
www.downloads.com or www.tucows.com. What you want is a "Help" program
maker. Generally, however, you create html and compile it from there.
But any decent programmer could make html from your database and also
provide search capability, much like our programmers did here:

Hope it helps!
