Yeah, I know he's a sick man but I am registered with the Royal Mail
never to receive any Junk Mail. And, yes, Tone's letter arrived in the
post along with my legitimate stuff.

Of course, if Tone had been offering me a well deserved Knighthood or
some such then I would have turned a blind eye but it was just a
blatant electioneering blurb.

If you can't trust the Prime Minister who can you trust?

I'm now becoming just a wee bit suspicious about his claims about
Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Please put my mind at rest.

Thank you dear Researcher(s) and you much cheaper Common Tater(s).

There was a reply-paid form but it also had a stamp-sized box with the
advice that by attaching a stamp, I could reduce the Labour Party's
costs!

I was supposed to tick the issues that concerned me so that they could
address them in their upcoming programme ...

But, of course, it was only to determine where they should pitch their campaign.

I returned the form (without stamp) saying that the issue that
concerned me most was cutting out Junk Mail.

I also said that I had intended to vote for Tone (which was a lie) but
I had changed my mind as a result of his mailer.

Bryan...

That reminds me of this true story...

An Idaho Potato married a lovely Irish Potato and their
union produced a Sweet Potato whose beauty was unsurpassed.

Many years later, Walter Cronkite became enamored of their
attractive daughter, and Walter eventually worked up the
nerve to approach her father for her hand in marriage.

Her father was adamant, however, and insisted that Walter
could not marry his daughter, under any circumstances.

Of course, Walter asserted his right to an explanation
of this seemingly arbitrary decision.

The father pointed out that his daughter's bloodline was
very pure, and he simply could not abide having her marry
a common 'tater.

Bryan,
Personally I don't mind Junk Mail. I wait for two junk letters, swap
the paperwork, and send it back in the prepaid envelope. Let them pay
for the privilege of receiving another company's junk mail. I'll send
Tony some metal detecting junk mail - he can use it to find WMD.

By the way, pleased see that Freddy found such a good source for you.
I'll post this here as you have expired the question.

I?ve had a quick look at The Times. This may or may not be of interest.

26.8.1931 Lord Lothian appointed Chancellor of the Ducky of Lancaster.
27.1.1932 Referred to as Under Secretary of State for India.
28.9.1932 Following the Ottawa Agreement, along with many other
Liberals resigned because of "divergence of view on economic and
fiscal policy".

25.10.1933 Following Germany leaving the League of Nations October 14,
addressed a Liberals meeting stating that the first step to peace was
to give Germany reasonable "equality in armaments" as her neighbours.
Bring her back into the fold as it were. Unless grievance was healed,
no future for peace in Europe. This one of several references in the
following years to Lothian speaking on Gemany ? both in the House of
Lords and at outside meetings.

28.1.1935 As Secretary of the Rhodes Trustees, visited former Rhodes
Scholars at meeting in Berlin. At the meeting he met several members
of the government and a general discussion occurred.

30.1.1935 Met Hitler and other influential members of the German government.

31.1.1935 and 1.2.1935 Long article by Lord Lothian on the German
problem (perhaps derived from the notes of the meetings)

4.5.1937 Brief article on his visit to Germany. Renewing contacts. Met
Hitler. Hour and half conversation on the general political situation
and prospects of European settlement reviewed. Brief discussion with
General Goering

Sober and upright (ish)

I recently received a solicitation for donation from the Republican
Party, who obviously need to find a better source for their mailing
lists. I made annotations all over the letter, rebutting any claims
of good leadership and such and threw in a few curse words for good
measure. I then returned it in the postage paid envelope.

(I like AF's comment and might start doing the same.)

I am still registered as a Democrat, although I have not actually been
one for more than a decade. I get all kinds of Demo-spam that usually
starts with "We know we can count on your support for [blah blah, yada
yada]." I guess one of the only advantaged to living in a totalitarian
society is that, since there aren't any real elections, nobody bothers
to spam the electorate. ;-)
