I would like to know how to disable the function on my car cassette
player that turns the tape over when it is finished playing one side.
My stereo is a Sony XR-C6100 tape player/cd changer. I am trying to
use a cassette adapter that gives a cord that I can plug into a
portable cd player or ipod with a headphone jack, but the tape keeps
turning over and then ejecting. I have not been able to find a manual
for this in-dash stereo on the internet.

Hi!!

I had the same problem with one adapter and I solved it after realize
that the wheels of the adapter was stuck, with a pencil I made it turn
and the when it did turn easily it worked fine.

Let me know if this helps.

Thank you.

thanks for the tip, but it didn't work for me. When I pop the tape
adapter in, the stereo fast forwards it, then plays it forward for a
couple seconds (for these couple seconds I can hear music from the
plugged-in device, then ejects the tape adapter

extrepid-ga:

Can you take another look at your cassette adapter, and advise on the following?

1. Using a pen or pencil stuck into the 'leading' spindle, and turning
it, does the other spindle rotate as well?

2. Again using a pen or pencil stuck into the 'other' spindle and
turning it, does the 'leading' spindle turn?

The reason I ask this, is because the auto-reverse capability of a
tape player is usually triggered by one of three methods: the
'trailing' spindle not turning, the 'leading' spindle preventing the
drive motor from turning (a situation caused by reaching the end of
the tape, for example), or a method to detect the non-magnetic tape
section at the ends of the tape.

Since you indicated in your clarification to my colleague
livioflores-ga that your spindles turn freely, I suspect that the
auto-reverse feature in this player is of the former type, where the
trailing spindle needs to turn. If your cassette adapter does not
feature a geared link between the two spindles, then you may need to
seek out a new adapter. Please let me know if your adapter does indeed
have linked spindles.

Hey, thanks for your request for clarification. In response:

I'm not sure which is the leading spindle and which is not, but if I
turn either one of them, the other spindle turns as well. It seems
they are just interlocked gears. They are definitely linked.

Also, when I pop the adapter in, it automatically starts
fast-forwarding, leading me to believe that perhaps the simple gears
don't offer it enough tension or something. But I don't know.

Hmm, based on that it would appear then that the unit does indeed
detect the presence of magnetic tape.

From the information that I have been able to find online, namely the
user manual located at:

http://www.docs.sony.com/release/XRC6100.PDF

it indeed appears that your player has the ability to detect silences
on the tape. Please clarify a few additional points for me:

1. Have you disabled the BLANK SKIP feature? This is button 6 during tape playback.

2. Have you tried inserting the cassette adapter with the other side up instead?

thanks for the tip -- it didn't work. i turned BLANK SKIP off using
button 6, but the same result happened. the tape played for about 2
seconds, then ejected. no automatic fast-forwarding this time,
though.

and i can only insert the tape one way because of the shape of the
tape player, and the fact that the cord from the adapter only comes
out of one side.

Hmm... unfortunately then it seems that this cassette adapter will not
work with this particular deck. The alternative is to use an FM
wireless transmitter; this may be easier in the long run than trying
to find a cassette adapter that will work. Sorry!
