Question ID: 409791
How do I print out this this word in Greek lettering:

"THERAPON."

Supposedly the word "therapist" derives from the Greek word "therapon."

I've searched, but don't trust the online translation sites. And
because I can't read Greek, I can't tell if it's on any Greek sites.

I need to know EXACTLY how to write it -- no guessing. And what you
give me must be "therapon." Not "Therapy." But is it even possible
to print Greek letters here totally accurately?-- what with everything
here being in Courier font.

To spare you repeating things I've already done:

I went on Altavista.babelfish and typed therapist and got this:

?¿?É÷ÉÀ.

Probably NOT it, I would think.

Then I tried Sherlock's translator (I'm on a Mac) and got this for "therapist:"

????????

But when I did the reverse translation, that word came back as "Treatment."
But then when I typed in English "treatment," a whole new Greek word came up.
And so on and so on. . .

Any Greek researchers out there? I looked at Apteryx-ga's old
question here, "Reseachers, What are your languages?" -- but out of 35
comments, nobody mentioned speaking Greek.

Thanks (or however you say it in Greek) --

You're in luck, Cryptica!

I lived in Greece when I was child, so I have a fairly good
understanding of the Greek language.

THERAPON in Greek is spelt, THETA - EPSILON - RHO - ALPHA (with
accent) - PI - OMEGA - NU.

I checked this using Arnold Manderson's "Teleion Angloellenikon
lexikon" (A Complete Greek-English Dictionary).

I have scanned the word from the dictionary, together with its
meaning, so you can see exactly how it is written.

See:

You will also find the word listed here (see #2324):
http://www.jcsm.org/StudyCenter/kjvstrongs/STRGRK23.htm

From the Rapha Christian Counselling website:

"The etymological history of the word "therapy," the Greek therapeia,
with its derivatives therapon, therapeuo, and therapontos, gives birth
to some illuminating meanings for the current practice of Christian
counseling. Therapeia means, "service." The noun appears frequently in
the works of Aristotle, Hippocrates, Philo and Josephus. In his book,
Kerygma and Counseling, Thomas Oden wrote, "More particularly, it
means attentive, caring service, the kind of heedful, scrupulous,
conscientious care that one would hope to receive in private and
intimate matters, such as medical service. The therapon is the servant
who renders careful, experienced, watchful, meticulous, skilled,
obedient, painstaking service to the one to whom he is intimately
responsible." (Oden, p. 147)
Notably the closest Greek synonym for therapon is diakonos, which also
means "servant." We can glean from the linguistic resemblance the
concepts of the therapist and minister. In fact, in the ancient world,
therapeia was commonly translated into Latin as ministerium. Among the
Greek words signifying "servant" (therapon, diakonos, oiketes, pais,
doulos), the most intimate of these is therapon, which always refers
to personal, considerate, and confidential act of service."

jackburton--

Perfect! Exactly what I need. Quick question -- can you tell me what
resolution you scanned that in? I'm on a Mac and I haven't figured out
how to find out "properties" like a on a PC.
What dpi is it?

It's definitely readable -- but if it were bigger (like 300 dpi? )
then our illustrator would be able to see the letters more clearly
to make his own version. But don't worry, if you can't do it.
It's only a thought.

By the way, I read a wonderful definition of therapist / therapon years ago :
 "comrade in the common struggle."

Cryptica,

I had scanned it at 300 dpi, but I've scanned it again at 600 so you
should be able to see it better now. If not, let me know.

Thanks for the mention! :)

It took me longer to TYPE the question than it took jackburton to
answer it. And that answer was exactly what I was looking for.

I thought that maybe this could help you out.
I have greek characters on my keyboard, so I write here "therapon" as
it is written in greek, in both capital and small letters:

???????
???????

There's accent only in the second one, cause in greek there are no
accents when a word is written in capital letters.
I thought that perhaps it's more useful to you in this format, than in
an image, as you can copy it from here and edit it the way you like.

It's not too greek to me, because I'm greek :-)

Thank you unatuzorized -- but I'm confused. Your "therapon" in small
letters ends with that "w v" kind of letters. . . but if you look at
the link that jackburton gave me, there are MORE letters..

o v t o and hat funny little fish hook S. What are those extra letters?

Cryptica,

I think the entry in the lexicon may have confused you.

Ignore the letters that follow "w n". Those letters indicate that
-ONTOS can also follow from THERAP, forming the word THERAPONTOS
(genitive case).

THERAPON (in small caps) is written like this:

THERAPONTOS (in small caps) is written like this:
http://68.15.21.151/uploads/researchers/therapontos.jpg

I should have made this clear before. Sorry!

Yes -- I guess I should beware of Greeks bearing Genitive case.
Thanks for the clarification. I certainly would have printed it out
the first way, so a tip of the hat to unautorized-ga. Thanks again.

jackburton gots that exactly right.
therapon means therapist and "therapontos" is "therapon"'s genitive case.

I'm really glad I have helped you, as jackburton's answer was so good
that I didn't think you may need any more info.

jackburton & unautzorized11 -- your helpful Greek tutorial has paid off.
It's too long to type, so go over to my previously answered question,
"Singin' A Freud Tune" and read my comment at the bottom about this,
"Therapon" will be included in the program I mention -- thanks to you.
