Hi,
I've been frustrated by multiple changes of colleges over the last
several years and am noticing it's becoming more idiotic to ask for
and retrieve transcripts. I'm an IT guy who's well aware of the
capabilities of technology and was wondering why colleges haven't
started consolidating their transcript databases. I'm also very
much interested in an assesment of how one might overcome these
hurdles and convice colleges to start doing such an operation.
Effectively I want help thinking about how I can help create an
organization that will make an online request for transcripts
possible, there-by simplifying a prospective student's life in
following that path.
I've thought about some of the basics, but feel free to fill in:
Security-
-By far the biggest concern would be privacy/security. (Also seems
the most ludicrious given the many methods of security)
-Hacking would be a big concern. The challenges are formidable, but
overcome by various methods.
-Proprietary nature of transcripts. Just like your credit report,
this could be considered proprietary information and have similar
hurdles.
Business/poltical
-Conflicts of interests? Not sure what possible conflicts of interest
might arise, but I could forsee problems if this was a for-profit
organization.
-There would likely have to be work done with the accredition agency,
but I'm clueless on this. I haven't a clue what the leanings are on
this.
-Who would be against this and why? Who for?
Financial
-Is this best as a for-profit, non-profit, or governmental organzation?
-If for-profit, what is the service/product? Who owns it, who gets the cut?
-If governmental organziation, under what branch and how would one get a mandate?
-If non-profit, how does one stay feasible?
-Business plan based on transcript fees or is an organization like a
credit report a better idea?
Legal
-Is it legal for a third-party system to manage and distribute a
certified copy of a transcript?
-What's the legal recourse for improper transcripts? (thinking credit reports) |
